Steering wheel differences

Tried finding some info but was unsuccessful with it. I wanted to know the difference between the 4th gen steering wheel and the newer model steering wheels. My wheel is starting to get old and I wanted a new style. Can the newer wheels fit my 98? Wiring isn't a big deal just want to know about fitment. Thanks.

I just changed my wheel out, with another 4th gen one. It was very easy. Your best bet, if you want something different is a i30 wheel.

you swapped wheels?
doesnt that affect the airbag?
my wheel cover is about to fall off entirely and i was going to get a wheelskins
is replacing the whole steering wheel really an option?
what about the cruise controls buttons or the airbag? how do you get around that stufF?

Yes, its about a 10 min job. Here is how its done

1. This is important!!! Remove your ground from your battery and wait 10 minutes.
2. now remove the covers around the wheel. There are 3 total, one on the bottom, one on the left side and one black one over the cruse control buttons (this one just pulls off).
3. Now remove the cruse control buttons by removing the two screws and it just pulls out.
4. Now unplug the air bag. connector is seen in the bottom side of the wheel. were the cover was.
5. Now remove both T50 screws (that hold the airbag). They are on the left and right sides of the wheel. and put the air bag in a safe place.
6. unhook cruse control cable.
7 Remove the big nut holding the wheel to the shaft.
8. Now you have to pull the wheel off, I put my knees behind the wheel, and pushed to get my old one off. It was not all that difficult. The junk car I go the new one from, I just pulled hard 2 or three times and it came off.

to reinstall just go through the steps in reverse.

well i don't really want another 4th gen wheel. Newer wheels are nicer and really shouldnt be a problem to install. Just need to make sure the airbag stuff plugs in right or can be wired. Cruise can be wired too. Just need to pay attention when you take things apart.

I just did it last weekend - replaced my 96 wheel with a 97. Wiring was the same, but the clock spring was a little different, meaning putting a 97 wheel in 96 was a problem. I am pretty sure 99 wheel has a different connector on the back, so stay away.

Pulling the wheel off the shaft - i've seen surrestions to pull it with force, but there is a much easier way - tug at it from left, then right, then top, and bottom. Do it a couple of times if you want - then try to pull it, and it will probably come off very easily - all you're doing is breaking it loose from the splines of the shaft.

Also, THIS IS IMPORTANT - before you start, make sure your wheels are straight.

Or if you guys really want to do it right, get a steering wheel puller. You can probably rent one at Autozone and avoid breaking teeth that hold the steering wheel where it should be.

i thought it was a T48, but not just a reg T48, you need a T48 "security" socket. the T48 security socket has the center hole

The set I got has the hole in it, and the one I used said t50 on it.

Im not exactly sure on fitments, but I remember seeing a 95 with a 350Z steering wheel not to long ago. For cruise controls and settings, I would think looking at a FSM for each individual car would help out allot. Do you know what steering wheel you might want to try?

well i think the 350z wheel is the same as the 6th gen right? I was thinking either 350z or 6th gen so if I could find out if someone did that would be great.

its really not as easy as it sounds man. I replaced my 95 GLE wheel with a 98 SE and i had to change the HUB/CLOCKSPRING/AIRBAG(obviously). Well the catch is that now with the new hub you need the new stalks which is a BUNCH of wiring. the old stalks fit but they mount in a certain way that prevents the auto turning off of the blinkers after you complete your turn.

another thing, the old steering column cover didnt fit with the new hub and old stalks. I have yet to try a new one. just alot of the things to keep in mind.
