Tachometer Problem

My tachometer is going crazy! The problem is on and off. When it happens, the needle is jumping all over the place. Where does the signal for the tach come from? That will be my first place to investigate.

mine too! i bought my max used with 60,000 miles on it, and that was the only thing wrong with the car... my mechaninc (not a nissan dealer) said not to worry since my car's automatic. i sure would love to fix it though - especially when some other repairs require you to pay attention to rpm's when testing, etc. can anyone help us fix the bad tach?? btw- it's justr a bad reading - the car's not revving & stalling like the tach is showing.
thanks
maury

It may be a loose connector to the guage assembly. If you have the Haynes manual, it has directions for removing the guage assembly on page 11-14 and 11-15.

I will have to look into that. The problem started after I changed the hoses and coolant. I may have gotten coolant on wherever the signal comes from. Who knows? Looked in the Haynes manual... no luck as to if there is a sensor or anything. Oh well......

My tachometer stopped working months ago and then my alternator went. After I replace my alternator my tachometer started working again. Side note My brake light and alternator battery light was on for the past 6 months before my alternator actually crapped out on me
