i was pretty concerned with it all too. the online walkthroughs suck as far as pictures. i was imaging all these things going wrong and causing some sort of huge issue cuz of incorrect installation.
i was actually PMing local members offering them 40 or 50 bux to drive to my city and help me with it. but once i just sat and looked at it and started trying to map out what i was gonna do (or tell my neighbor to do) it was easy. like i said, the most consuming part of the job was getting the virgin bolt loose for the first time.

the moral of the story is just get a small girl or child who is willing to be bought with food and give them a small wrench and tell them to go to work. you dont even need an org member, just someone responsible enough to not drop the KS or the bolt into the manifold valley.

ROCKART don't u have to worry about the torque you put on the bolt ? like someone mentioned it before ? hmm i wish i could of lived in Fl maybe then your neighbor would help me haha .. but yea anyways so basically what u do is disconnect the battery then disconnect the harness then unscrew the bolt , put the new sensor in the with the harness attached and screw back on ? or did i miss something

yea i was mildly concerned. i told her to tighten it to "snug" and then had her practice on a couple of other random exposed bolts in my engine bay. i dont know what setting she ended up gettin it at, but its running fine. like i said i feel a very dramatic difference in pull.
its like i was driving a 4 cylinder before.

xkazink you got your instructions a bit wrong

Dont need to disconnect the battery, i duno about cali spec, but regular fed spec there will be a green connector in the way of the KS valey. remove it temporarily, do not remove the KS harness first, just undo the bolt and pull the whole assembly out, this way you will ge the KS out easier, and not loose the clip that holds it to the harness...

installation is the reverse. dont forget to reset the ECU after and only use 91 octane to feel any difference, otherwise there is no point replacing the KS if you wanna run 87

yea see the green connector in the first pic i posted. its labeled DISCONNECt.

i would just replace it anyway at 107k. use a 12mm bolt on an extension or just a 12 mm rachet and someone with small hands. its pretty easy to figure out once you are looking at it.

Yes it is a sensitive sensor and its amazing how after having my parts guy deliver it a bomb proof package how quickly I managed to drop it 3 feet onto the concrete floor! I can't believe the bad luck I've had lately! Fortunately it worked fine and the car has had so much more pull that I'm driving it like the sports car that it is for the past two months.
Bad news is I pushed my remanufactured transmission so hard that I flushed out a flaw in its rebuild and it now needs its main bearing and or ring gear redone....again, its currently undriveable...........:{

at that point i figured id spend the extra 60 to get the OEM nissan-backed one. after all this is a sensor, not just a peice of metal or plastic. i imagine its pretty fragile and prone to errors.

No need to replace the KS if there is no code. You need to to read the code, however. A bad sensor does not light up the MIL.

Why do so many people replace the harness as well? I know Courtesy sells a kit with the sensor and harness, but on all of the ones I have done, I never had to replace a harness. As long as your careful with removing the metal clip that is...

in my case i had some retard that owned the car before me and he put on the wrong Knock Sensor (looks like it came from an xterra.... plug is round not square like ours) and broke the Harness to make it fit.. HMMM wonder why the thing is bad!

so yeah i needed a harness too.. but i am getting a used one that should be fine..

actually in my hightened excitement i broke the little plastic tooth that holds the metal U clip in place around the harness. but i just bent it a little more than normal to keep it tight and it fit pretty well.

I was able to get my left hand in there(yeah i did get cut up, and is pretty frustrating) but after a couple beers and a little more patience I was able to get her off with a wrench(one with the fork on one side, and round on the other, I used the round part) then used a magnet on an extension to pull out the loosened KS. Didnt torque it cause my torque wrench wouldnt fit but I noticed more pull soon as I started driving.

I did mine. 1st I dropped the tools I used into the spot where the KS is and I got my hand in there and got the socket on the nut and just used a bar to crack the bolt and did it by hand afterwords...Tooks me about 30mins-1hr Nissan wanted to charge me $450 because it was a "4 Hour" Job...Ya if your taking off the manifold and the rest of the engine apart to get to it...Becareful sticking your hand down there its like razor blades litterally got cut up pretty bad...

So I figured i would take a peek at my sensor too

My milage was horrible. So I removed to take a look,

And OH MY, it looks like a car had run over it. Its cracked and broken from 2 places.

But now when I check the resistances between pin 1 and 2 it give me 550 ohms. I know my multimeters range is 40M so its ok. But then it still give me the correct resistor reading. Does it mean its still good. Or I need to change it.

Any advise would be useful.

THanks

Thanks Rockart,
I appreciate your reply, I would have wanted to post some pics but the forums dont allow me. I think I will do it myself because I am able to get my hands in there. I am pretty underweight, 95 lbs. and my wifes even smaller.

Appreciate it.

550 k Ohms on KS

So I replaced mine a couple months back and the bad one read 550 k Ohms also, with and without the harness, same as the good one with the new harness......put the old one back in.....ran like crap.......put the new one in....runs like a racehorse! I don't know why, the piezo crystal may be firing when it shouldn't .......I dunno........I would replace it though and see for yourself. Buy a new box of bandaids before you do the job..and search "Knock sensor" for lots of threads on it.

Please! no one needs to spend 120 on a KS, every one knows that they are readily available for around $65 depending on the site and their shipping rules

yea as i said, www.rockauto.com has the generic one for 66 bux. but i asked dave burnette about it and he said it wasnt a good idea, especially for a sensor. then again hes a salesman.....

My sensor that i bought here http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com...2b2187b0529cfa

looked exactly like the one i pulled out of the car, with the nissan logo, stamp, writing and quality control dot.

even if it was "fake" there is no one on this site that has yet to report problems using ANY of the sensors bought all over the place - even ebay

Its not even that an important of a sensor that you need to go all out .
