my 98 max has that problem too, but at mid range rpms, and especially when gearing down from third to second. sometimes when it's colder, i can't even gear down into second, cause i just cant get it in. i took it to the mechanic, and he said that the clutch was fine, and that reverse usually goes before anything if your tranny has problems... so i'm kinda facing the same issue as you

If you've recently had the tranny oil changed and didn't replace with GL-4 oil, that would make it hard to shift.

Is it really GL4 that goes into the tranny? I've had a few manuals now that require dextron atf. I know older trannys and truck trannys take gl4.

definately check the oil level if you're having hard shifts when it's cold. also, try the throwout bearing. I was having hard shifts in my s10, and a little grinding into second from either angle (upshift or downshift). replacing the throwout bearing solved the problem.

Yes, our 5 speed trannys do indeed call for GL-4.

.
All depends on the transmission, you use what it calls for, nothing else.

Hit up Talkinghorse (Ed) for some Amsoil GL4 full synthetic. Great guy to deal with plus better shifting.
