PLEASE HELP , quick question !

my friend has a 99' SE 5spd and it broke down on him a couple weeks ago. Took it to nissan they said the ecu and the wire harness are fried. Now he has a ready to drop in vq35 but my question is since the wire harness and ecu both need to be replaced can we use any 4th gen year harness and ecu, or since his car is a 99', do we strictly need to replace it with another 99' ecu and harness? Thanks !

if you are putting in a vq35 you need a vq35 ecu and wiring harness

IIRC you will need a harnes for a 3.5 not the 3.0 .... never done one so I don't know for sure ... but serch, you'll find it.

btw: how the hell did he fry the ECU and harnes? fire ????

i'm the friend hes talking about. we put a z32 maf on it and they said that wiring job may have fried it. we followed the wireing diagram to a t never touch any wires together either so i'm not really sure. but nissan said the computers bad for sure but the wireing harnes maybe or may not be bad they just dint want to take the chance and hook up another working ecu to it and fry that one too. but i have a vq35 ready to drop and was thinking this is better anyway cause i can just get a 95-98 wiring harness and ecu and have plenty more ecu options. we just want to make sure its possible before i go buying parts

Yes, 99 5spd ECU assuming you are using VQ30 timing case on the VQ35.

If you want to use the 5.5 ECU (which I don't think you are asking) you need to have a doner car to pull other various parts from the SAME car that the ECU comes from.

i know that ecu tuning and other options are limited on 99's , so lets say i got a 98' wiring harness, and then a 98' ecu, that would be alright correct? And as long as i use the timing components off of the 99' motor thats in my car right now, using a 98' harness and 98' ecu will work with the vq35 right?

I see what you are saying. I would think that if you had a matching harness for the '98 ECU it would be fine from that point of view. You have to check into the aspects of the immobilizer and what other components are connected with that in the '99. I have a '98 and a '97 FSM so I can't say for sure.

yeah alright ill check it out, i just figured that all the aspects such as the immobilizer and some other components that have to do with a 99' were functioned by the 99' ecu which has to have the matchin harness, so i just figured if i switch out the harness with the matching ecu it would eliminate those components

I tried to look it up but I recall the gauges and the ignition/fuel pump being related to the immobilizer system. Hopefully some '99/'00 guys can shed some light.

i was thining something like that also because right now the car isnt getting any fuel or spark. nissan told me that both the ecu and most likely the wiring hardness was bad because it may have melted some of the wires and now they are touching which fried the ecu. but if the ignition and fuel are related i guess i would have to find a way to handle all that i guess?

'01 is 3.0 but VQ30DE-K as opposed to 95-99 VQ30DE. The 3.5 became availible in 2002.

Thanks! when did the 6spd come to life in the Maxima? I thought it was 01' but that wouldn't be the case with the 3.0 ... so I am guessing, 02'?

Mate ... check the scrap yards and see if you can find one used. If you're gonna buy new .... get a JWT ECU. (higher rev range)
