Remote Start

I'm interested in adding a remote start to my 99 SE. Im looking at the following
-Python 1400XP
-Python 460HP
-Python 571XP

All are made by DEI.

Here is info I already have..........

--Planning to have it professionally installed, I know it can be a mess DYI.

--I realize that I will have to give up a spare key and buy a transponder box because my 99 has a chip in the key.

What I'm wondering is......

--I hear that installing this may actually disable some stock things that I really like such as my keyless entry/trunk opener/panic (can't find my car in the parking lot) alarm that all come standard on my max and are operated by my key fob. Is this true? Can't find specifics on the DEI website.

--All 3 units are priced similarly........anyone have one installed on their car and can give me specific info?

suggestion?

the only thing you really LOSE is the open the front windows from the remote.. everything else can be preserved. But the opening windows thing can be preserved too with modules..

you should go to the12volt.com and look at that stuff

i worked in a professional shop doing 12V electronics on cars....audio, remote starters, cruise controls....so hopefully i can help! and when i say professional, i am NOT talking about big box stores thank you very much. If the shop knows what they are doing you do not need to lose a key. 2 keys WILL BE REQUIRED at the time of installation to program the transponder bypass module. I dont remember if our car falls into this category, but some cars, your factory keyless entry remote will not work when the car is running (child safety issue) so if your car is remote starter, your factory keyless entry will not work. If you key keyless/trunk with your remote start, they will work while your car is running...Some remote starters have panic built in to their remotes as well. HomerMac was correct that you will lose the window features on your factory remote, but they also can be maintained with some remote starters....it will cost you though. And last but not least, remote starters DO NOT void any factory warranties, although dealerships dont like them....and they ARE NOT bad for your car.

Anything i failed to cover?

Ok now I'm getting it......The addition of the remote start system doesn't itself actually disable the original keyless entry system. It is simply the fact that it is a safety feature on some cars that the OEM key fob features are disabled by the car itself when the engine is running. So as long as I haven't actually started the car w/ the remote start my OEM key fob should work normally. Correct?

As for the lose-a-key issue.........as I understand it there are 2 options. You can install a transponder bypass module and not lose a key OR you can lose a key and not have to buy the bypass module at all. I have an old key with a good chip but the top part that attaches to the keyring is snapped off so I don't use it anyway. I guess it comes down to what works better $$ and convenience-wise.

I can't find a deal in town even close to the one offered at Circuit City (shudder) so I'm gonna go talk to them first B4 I let them touch anything.

Please lemme know if anything I wrote above is wrong!

I have a python 881xp w remote start. the only option that I lost was the ability to roll the windows down with the factory remote. But on the other hand my car is a 97 but when I did my full 3.5 swap I taped the key & nats module from the infinity 3.5 together & stuffed them deep into the dash so i could still use my original key. The alarms you're looking at will still give you the ability to lock & unlock, panic, trunk release as well as start the car so will be ok with either of your choices

I have been researching this for a while for getting one installed in my 99SE. Here is what I have found -

If you want to the keyless entry function of the remote start to work w/ the new keyfob then the door panels have to be pulled off for some additional wiring (CC quoted $70 in labor for this).

You will in fact have to lose a key for the 556u module. The newer cars where you can program your car to a new key can use a different module which can be "trained" to work w/ the car but not ours. CC is charging $50 for the 556u but you can find it much cheaper online.

maximagasm...sorry it took me so long to get back, but your response post was correct...in fact everyones post is correct in their own way. the beauty of 12V electronics is that they can be made to work anyway you want them to, or anyway you're willing to pay for them to. keyless on our cars...yes, you need to get at wires inside the drivers door panel, and you can get all of your other wires either under the steering column, or behind your radio. as for brands...definitely do your research. some cheap brands might work fine for you, but i will say this...there definitely are "good, better, best" brands. pick your head ache.
