which coil pack is bad...

Hello, I feel like this question prob gets asked all the time but we all know how the search works. I just can't justify donating to a forum i visit once a year. It seems like not letting people search just makes the forum suck b/c people will just keep asking the same questions over and over again. Why not charge for something like the ability to have an avatar or sig. Sorry for the rant - that just kinda came out.

My dad's 99' max seems to miss or be down on power when doing a pull through a gear at certain rpms and that sometimes it comes back in the same pull. I was messing around with it and got a flashing CEL fro a few seconds, but when I took it to autozone the next day they said it didn't have any codes.

I'm thinking it is another pesky coil pack, but i'm not sure which one. Is there any good way to test them, or tell which is going?

Thanks for the help.

There should have been codes the first time. But next time it happens if you can go straight there. That way itll be fresh in.

If it's a 99, you're probably going to need all 6 coils. Flashing SES + symptoms you're explaining = multiple cylinder misfire.

The Mitsubishi's are usually the bad ones (come with most 99's). Pull the coils and read the names on them...it won't take more than 5 minutes to do the front ones. If they are Hashin they may have already been replaced.

None the less, check the ECU for codes to find out which cylinders are misfiring. If more than 2 coils are Mitsu's I would go ahead and try to buy a set of 6 used Hashin ones.

thanks, i'l check this afternoon. So i guess the 99's came with mitsu coils which suck? I never thought of buying used coils, are the hashin's just that good? I know that I've replaced at least two with units from auto zone, was that a mistake?

Thanks again for the help.

Used Hashin's are usually your best bet. I've seen sets of 6 going for < $100 in the classifieds + on eBay.

I don't know if the ones you got from autozone are crap or not, try and find out who made them, then report back to us. Mitsu coils are terrible. I have a 99 and all 6 are Hashin and must have been changed by the previous owner.

One of my coils had to be replaced, now a year later, another one is acting up. It comes and goes, shakes randomly sometimes at a stop. It's really weird.

The first time, i got lucky, the coil was so bad that i had enough time to unplug and check to see which one it was...as in, if i unplug one coil, and it happens to be the bad one, it shud continue to shake, if i unplug another coil, which is good, the car might stutter more and stall. This way u can determine which coil is shot instead of buying all 6 at one time.

I would recommend checking the coils resistance before you replace them. It saves a lot of money Get a Haynes or Chilton they have the resistance check, or search for it.

I just had to check mine today. FSM says do the following:

Pull the coils and check resistance accross pins 2 and 3. These are the ones on the right if you are looking at the pins and the rod is pointing down.

If NO resistance is read, then it is bad.

If some resistance is read(I got like 1200 ohms, IIRC) then it is good.

(if you dont get a reading at first, try the other two pins. If neither combo works, coil is bad. But if its good, only one combo will work).

What do coils run on these cars? I just had to replace one on our LS8 and it was pretty pricey. Glad I didn't have to replace all 8, that's for sure.

hmmm... I checked all the coils for resistance and brand. They were all hanshin except the autozone one (thought i had to but guess not). It didn't have a brand name, but it had part numbers so i'm going to try to figure out who makes them.

here's the weird part. I measured the resistance across pins 1&2 and 2&3 and on all the coils got 1400-1599 ohms on one pair and no continuity on the other pair except for one of the back coils. it was showing like 900ohms on the second pair of pins. I might replace it with an Az unit once i figure out who makes it to see if it fixes the problem. i can always return it, its AZ haha.

well i didn't find anything with the part numbers but Autozone's is a duralast and advance auto has a GP Sorensen for the same price but i'm not really sure which would be better.

There is someone selling working 4th gen coils individually for $20 each. I think his name is turbo_95gxe. You can't miss it. It is on the first page of the 4th gen classifieds.
