AT vs. MT

So i already posted a thread about me getting a car in the near-to-mildly distant future...But i have a new q that has arisen(if thats a word) b/c of the many loathesome things that i have heard in regard to AT on the Max(and AT in general)....

Soooo...what are the reasons for this "hatred?"

-and-for current and previous AT owners

Do/Did u wish that u had gotten MT??? Is AT really THAT boring

I have a 99 Auto with around 130K Miles on it and the auto is still going strong. I have done some modifications though like valve body, high stall converter and a transmission cooler and after those mods the auto feels much different and is far from boring. I recommend doing at least a drop resistor mod or VB mod with a tranny cooler if you go the auto route. As far as wishing if I had gone MT to start with...I probably thought about it before doing the mods but now it never occurs to me

Good luck

...IBTL.

It's all personal preference.

4AT A32s are slower (stock). Highly modified, the auto will beat a manual every time, at the very least in consistency.

5MT A32s are fragile, the RS5F05? is reported to have gears like glass. Faster stock.

This type of thread has been made about a thousand times, they always get locked because it tends to become a heated debate between MT and AT folk.

I also have an auto with 134,500 miles on it. I have no performance mods whatsoever. It's annoying, the programming sux.

I hate it when you slow down to 10-15mi/hr and have to accelerate back again, the tranny gets stuck in 2nd gear, and if you don't take it easy on the throttle, it downshifts (very annoying, kinda like in my dad's '07 camry). I also don't like the way the TC locks/unlocks (it's so seamless in other cars).

Other than that, i beat an i35 off the line when i gently floor it from a stop and went all the way up to 6K rpm!

But, passing somebody, it's just slow, and annoying. (unless you just floor it, and have it dowshift 2X)

One thing i did to improve the shifting quality was an auto-rx treatment, followed by a full flush with Mobil 1 Synthetic. That really smoothed out the upshifts and quickened the downshifts. I plan to do the same for my next car (which should be an '04 I35 ), and stick with auto.

(Obviously, this doesn't compare to whlimi's VB and TC mods)

I had a 96se auto years back. ilove it and wish I still have it(got rear ended and was a total loss). Now I got a 98se m/t, love it also, but sometime sitting in the Dallas traffic, I miss the auto.
Both tranny is going to last,if you take care of it.
So it really comes down to what kind of driving you do the most.

yeah its a own personal prefence. so you will be getting alot of diffrent opinions from others. i personally wont own a car with out it being a manuel trans. but thats just me. i know some of the fastest modded maxes are auto thou. they will just always have a perfect shift.(in theory) where with a man tranny there is a window for a mistake.

auto=ftl
lots of stop and go in a man=ftl

i just think a manual is more involving when you drive which makes it more fun. I had an 88camry auto and a 90camry man. and they are not fast cars but the manual was much more fun to drive

if you enjoy driving a car and are a car enthusiast then you want a manual but if you only drive your car to go to work/run errands and dont care about driving then you probly want an auto. its all personal preference.

im saying that he should get whatever he prefers. i prefer driving a manual but that doesnt mean im gonna tell him to get a manual car cause i dont know what kind of driving mentality he has.

After switching to a 5 spd. the car does behave like a totally different car. But FTL how fragile they are. I just mine rebuilt after totally shredding 3rd gear on the mainshaft and countershaft. But I don't regret doing the swap. With modified cars we kinda plan on this stuff happening sooner or later.

it's preference bro i have a MT maxima and i have an AT that has somethings done to the tranny and almost feels like a MT when i step on it but i just love my MT just being in control feeling lol. both have over 140k and going strong but MT gears are pretty crappy but dont have any problems.

you can rebuild a MT with better gears, thats what i plan on doing.

i've read up were a32 can get aftermarket one, they are not made for our cars but they fit perfect. they're suppose to take up better abuse and last longer. my friend has a link to it i will try and get a hold of it. it's a rebuild kit i think.
