The Timing Chain Jingle
The Timing Chain Jingle
I've read all the threads on how to fix it, I think, but my main question is, does the jingle actually hurt anything?
Mine does it at startup briefly, it sounds like there is loose change rattling, then it goes away. My question is, what happens if I don't do anything about it.
And is the consensus that you just need to replace that gasket in there? Looks like a PIA and would rather not tackle it at this point unless I'm on the fast track to kill my engine or something.
Thanks again. I'm new to this motor/car, so if my question seems stupid, sorry, I'm just trying to get my feet wet on this thing.

Before you settle on the TC being the issue...were the CV joints also changed in the past 6 months or so?
Reason I ask is that non-oem CV axles have a metal disc/ring ring on them that seems to come loose & is a bear to figure out till it's up in the air & running in gear.
Look for a post I started on this subject about a year ago.

I'd still check both axles for the loose ring. I wasn't able to hear it on mine so much when it was idling but there was enough play in the ring diameter that it was still making a jingle. The ring will be near the tranny end of the axle. My only loose one was on the pass side. I just covered the ring in RTV and seated it against the cheap spot welds that had come loose.
Hope you find the same. The dealer could not even locate the problem ...but did tell me that it wasn't the tensioner.

So, the consensus is that little gasket is the problem? I may take it somewhere, just so they can make sure the tension is right on it, that's something I don't know much about.
I just re-read that link on how to replace your tensioner and that gasket and there is NO WAY I'm tackling that. If it took an experienced guy 3+ hours, my car will be an antique before I'd get done.
I'm ready to get flamed for this ...but that would be a dealer check-out situation for me...
I don't trust a garage that works on everything to be able to also understand the specific characteristics of and have expperience with a timing chain issue with the VQ engine. I do what I can myself, but that chain is important shiznit.
Maybe I'm spoiled from the Infin. dealer giving the free loaner and from having the cash to afford them....but peace of mind has no price.

If I can find a Nissan specific mechanic, which I should be able to do in KC, I'd trust them, for sure. But, I see where you're going and don't disagree.
