Car messed up

check your clutch fluid level. it's likely that the clutch isn't disengaging when you press down the pedal. if the fluid level is low or empty, you either have a leak in the clutch line or in the master cylinder or slave cylinder.
i actually have a very slow leak in my clutch line, every 3-4 months i have to refill my clutch fluid or else i stop being able to shift. i've ordered a new line, but haven't got around to installing it yet...

I have no idea about the car . Is it an auto 5sp? if 5 sp can you put it in gear with the car off. When it doesnt move does your speedo go up? These are all things that are needed here man.

OK does your speedo go up when you do this? check your axles and make sure they didnt break.

ummmmm, if the car doesnt move then the clutch is dead... you press the clutch pedal IN to disengage the pressure plate from the clutch disk, with the pedal all the way OUT, it makes NO difference if you have no fluid, a leak, or any other problem with the clutch hydraulics, the effects of those issues cause inability to shift gears, meaning the car will always stay in gear. your problem as i understand it is you can shift into gears but you cannot accelerate when in any of them... you need a new clutch, your old one is burned.

maybe the shift linkage broke, that's another possibility as well. very unlikely, but then again we need more details as to what is happening.
does it go in any gear? can you pull it in and out of "gear" without grinding / anything happening?

A clutch doesn't simply stop working, it slowly slips until it's fried. He's got nothing happening, no power to the wheels.
If it was hydraulic failure the clutch would remain engauged and he would not be able to shift into gear when standing still.
If he can shift the trans into gear and nothing happens when he lets the clutch out, I'd be looking at the tranny or even a broken drive shaft/CV joint, not the clutch.

Read his description again. Car was driving, then all of a sudden......

i dont agree, the clutch can definetely stop working in a very short period of time. you can go from slipping to nothing in a matter of minutes, i have experienced it and know for certain it can happen. the problem is that the more it slips, the faster it will eat the clutch away, ive seen clutches where the driver felt the first slippage at one stop light and at the next had no ability to move the car. the chance of it being anything besides a worn out clutch is highly minimal, it would be very easy to notice something was seriously wrong if one broke ones axles, transmission, cv joint, shifter linkage, whatever. the clutch is the only component in the driveline that could quickly become inoperable without giving many clues to the untrained driver.
