please help cps(pos)car wont start...i searched

hello all...well i bought another max a couple of weeks ago and at first it broke up around 4500.i checked codes and cps code came up.i didnt know there were two at the time so i cleaned the one that reads off the crank pulley and also cleaned cam sensor just cuz it was there.took the car out and no difference.came here searched, than the next day on my break i shot home took the cps off my 96 and brought it back to work to put it on my 98.i guess in all my excitement(fixed the problem btw) i didnt put the bad sensor back in the 96.it sat for two or three days until i saw the sensor at work.the next day i put the cps sensor(the "bad" one that origonally came with the 98) back into the 96.the car cranks all day but will not start.

now even with this "bad" cps the other car was starting fine.i even put the other one back it to see and it didnt help at all.i think i messed up by leaving that hole where the sensor goes open for a couple of days. maybe the points got rusty or something so the sensor cant read.can i take the sensor out and spray some wd40 in there while cranking,if it will even crank with sensor out?cel is on but was before i did this for rear o2.should i pull codes now and if cps is there just clear it? im soooo stuck with this car now because i have to sell it due to parking.any help will be greatly appreciated.thanks................................ .....

Which CPS did you forget to put back on the '96?

well i just pulled the codes and it came up "no failure/codes detected".but there is definatly a failure.car is getting gas,i could tell when i was cranking it.should i take cps(pos) sensor out and clean mounting surfaces?can i spray maybe some wd40 in there because i think some surface rust might have formed.could the harness be at fault because i tried two different ones and still no start.ill have to find what voltage im looking for to check the harness i guess.....anything else?tia

is the only advice the fourth gen forum can give about one pieces and ******* gas lights? ive seen pointless threads flourish and than someone has a legit question/problem and no one can help or comment.if any body can help me out with this problem or point me in the right direction I would be very thankful.just kinda pisses me off that out of so many views there was only one response.

Evasion of the profanity filter isn't taken too kindly around here. The filter is there for a reason.

Have you checked for spark? Fuel? Timing? Compression?

You haven't tried cleaning up the sensors, or testing them with a multimeter, or testing the harness all the way back to the ECU...and you're *****ing about not getting any help?

you say both sensors work in the 98 but the 96 will not start anymore with either sensor since you left it sensorless for a while to try and fix the 98?

neither sensor works on the car even though it was just working a couple of days ago?

what happens when you crank the car? the motor just cranks but nothing fires?

to check the sensor turn the car on with the sensor unmounted but connected to the harness. do the screwdriver test by testing the voltage between the white and black wires (terminals 2 and 3) while tapping a screwdriver's tip to the tip of the sensor quickly and then bringing it away, it should read five volts when the screwdriver touches.

you can carefully and sparingly spray wd40 carefully onto the signal plate but you dont want to spray it into the clutch (is it 5spd?). i highly doubt there is significant rust on it in only a couple of days.

ok found my multimeter.now i test the voltage between white and black wire?positive from multimeter to white and neg from multimeter to black wire or it doesnt matter?voltage should be around 5 volts correct?is a little under or over acceptable or not? if checking it with the screwdriver says sensor is good, which i have a feeling it is,how would i check the harness?is it possible to switch the harness with my other max.thanks.

check the ground (14g IIRC) that runs from the tranny to the frame on the left side of the car.
If its old, in messing around with the CPS to get it out you may have just loosened the connection, this is about the only good ground that starter has, and can cause a no-start.
In either case, replace the CPS with a new one.
Also, IIRC that sensor does ground through the threads. But again, the ground from the tranny is vital.
