trunk rattling. nor will it open with button.
My trunk's rattling. It also is loose to the point where the button wont open it. I have to manually open it with my key.
This was a gradual thing that i ignored until now. I can grab the trunk and shake it up and down. its not the spoiler, I tightened it all up. Its also not those rubber grommet things, they're all in place. Although i could probably get some bigger ones to fill the trunk car gap and hide the fault. I checked the bottom trunk latch piece and its setup properly. There's a bit of space that allows me to make it lower or higher. about an inch of free space. I put it all the way to the bottom to prevent play. The top latch piece does not have the option of raising and lowering it. I can not think of anything else.
I also noticed the latches on the 97-99 models look different from mine which looks flimsier.
any ideas??

Its possible the metal piece that the bottom latch is mounted to has came loose(the weld has broken) I had the same problem on my 96' for awhile and thats all it was. Just remove the plastic cover on the bottom back edge of the trunk area and take a look. If the weld is broken you will be able to see it very easily.
I have the "same" problem, although mine came from someone hitting me in the rear of mine.I havent gotten around to fixing it, and when i come to a stop, it looks as if the trunk is "floating"
........im assuming you would weld that latch back on??

If the weld is broken its not the latch that needs to be welded. Its the piece that the latch mounts to.
trying to figure out the piece that you're talking about welding to solve my trunk rattling problem. It rattles, and the trunk latch doesnt work, which Im sure is coming from the same problem.
so I threw some pics on the thread so u guys can help clear it up for me.
"1" is a piece that looks like it was broke and someone did a horrible job welding it back on. But I have no clue what purpose that piece serves, nor how itll help stop my rattling.
"2" looks like the more important piece as it allows the trunk openner to actually work. I currently doesnt work right. I press the button and hear "2" moving but the trunk dont open.
thanks guys.

**** i finally got it to work. I realized that even tho the bottom latch peice can really go up or down, it can still swivel left or right a good 20 degrees. so I swiveled it enough to get the trunk to go in place without rattling, and the trunk latch worked a good 10 times.
But then the trunk latched stopped working. After playing with it a fair amount of time, I finally added some thick padding to where the rubber grommets on the lid drop onto the car. about 1/2 to an inch worth off padding stuck to the car and now the trunk neither rattles nor gives problems popping open. Im gonna go to pep boys and find a replacement to my oem rubber grommets. Im sure they have adjustable ones there.
Im still wondering what that "1" piece is for and why theres a hole in it. Im assuming an emergency latch openning line would go through there or something.
Problem solved and it was easier than i made it out to be.

huh?? the last pic i posted shows the trunk locking mechanism. push it up using a scrwdriver or even the bottom piece and it would lock into place. then push the movable piece on the your left side to pop it back open. If that dont work i guess its broke. Im a noob so i cant help u after that.
