Should I Bite?

Alright, in our paper, there is a 95 SE with 74000 on it. They are asking 8500 for it. I ran the KBB and it gave me a price of 8800 with all the options. So is 8500 a fair price or should I try to get them down to 8000? It's automatic I'm sure. I have to wait until after 6 o' clock to call.

first ask for 8000, and if they won't accept, try to make a deal at 8250...

Get the VIN, kick the tires and if everything checks out start low ($7500) and work your way up. Notice EVERYTHING that's wrong with the car and bring it up when bargaining. Pay close attention to the tranny (shift feel) and the fluid levels/tire wear. Make sure the Air Bags are original (should match the dash color) and make sure it has not been repaired (VIN check).

I bought my 96 gxe with 63K on it in perfect condition for 9900 at a dealer, you can get this car for $8000 no problem.

Before you buy, see if you can get it inspected. You shouldn't have a problem if the person is an upfront person.

Look for two tone paint. Vin numbers should be in the doors, hood, trunk, front quarter panels. I use to sell and wholesale cars, make sure you take a look for these. Mines had body work in the front and back, I was able to beat them up on price because of it. I got an additional 2000 grand knocked off.

thanks, I was gonna get the VIN number and run a carfax report tonight. I just drove by the house, I used some reverse lookup thing, and nobody was home, so I guess that I will have to wait until after church to call. All the ad really says is: 1995 Maxima SE, Fully loaded, 75k. I dont know how long the car has been in the paper though, so it might have already been sold. I'll let you guys know what happens whenever I get home from church at 7.

Bring the price down. Three years ago I bought my old 95 GXE with 17in Chrome Concept Neeper rims for $9000 (62k miles) from a dealer. So there are obviously good deals out there.

If you decide that you want it, take the cash with you because when the seller sees that you are serious, theyll be so distracted theyll buckle. All they will be thinking about is getting the money you have into their pocket.

When you say cash, do you mean just bust out a wad of 80 100 dollar bills? I don't really wanna spend all of my savings at one time. I could pay for all of it in cash right now, but that would mean the the car would remain bone stock for awhile. If I get it, within the first month, I will put around 1000 into it in mods.

Well how else are you going to pay for it. Not to be rude, but people usually like to be paid when they sell something.

Well, I'm new to all this buying a car thing. This will be my first one. So when you take a loan out with the bank, they just give you the cash straight up, like they just hand you 8000 in cash? When my friend bought his car, they gave the dude a check.

This sucks

Alright, I'm ****ed. When I finally got hold of the guy, I have found out that the car was already sold. I swear, there is a conspiracy thing going on here that is preventing me from a finding the right car. This is the third time in four months that I have found a decent Maxima, only to call and find out that it had already been sold.

Keep waiting and don't rule out dealerships. Find some neighborhood dealerships and call them all once a week or so. It took me three months to find mine. I picked it up before it was even advertised because I called at the right time. I bought it 12 hours after they bought it. It's also nice that I have a bumper-to-bumper warranty on everything in the car for 3 years/30,000 miles for about $25 a month. Also, there is the appeal of paying for the car over time as versus all at once.
