looking to buy a 95-1999 maxima, a couple of questions...

Do SE's all have leather? The reason I ask is because I was looking at a maxima that I might get and they have it advertised as a 99 SE, it does have the SE spoiler, but it's cloth. I thought all SE's and GLE's only have leather, is this wrong? Also if I get cloth seats, is it too much trouble to put in leather seats or is there a conversion kit or something for it?

Thanks,
scott

If you want an SE specifically, then just look for white gauges - its the only trim level to have them (Im pretty sure)

it does not have white faced gauges, it does have the spoiler though and i'll have to check the code under the hood now that I know that. Thanks guys for answering my questions

non white gauges = non SE, no chrome = SE, 16in 5 spoke rims = SE, fog lights = SE. u can get leather kits for it but, should be installed by a professional, kits are like 700+

You can have foglights on GLE...
Chrome handles = GLE
Just look for white gauges, its the easiest way to spot an SE lol
I wouldnt get too hung up on leather - its nice sometimes but hot in the summer and slippery when its cold

GXE = your basic good ol' maxima
SE = your sporty maxima (appearance-wise, with white gauges, spoiler, bigger wheels, etc; and also a "sporty" suspension... I havent driven a GXE/GLE but my SE doesnt exactly scream handling at me)
GLE = your luxury maxima, although all of the toys were also optional on the SE

STICKIES FTW!

the dealer is seriously going to sell that car with those tires?? wow, it looks to have been beat on a little. keep lookin is my advice, plenty of maxes out there cleaner then that 1 and dealerships are dyin to sell a car in the winter so if you really want that car, i'd talk him down to like 3,900.00 and a new set of tires.

heck no, i'm not paying that price for that car! Those tires are even worse in person. My dad is going up there today and if it drives good and has good brakes, he's gonna offer $3500 with new tires on it(since it's at a dealership and they can do that)or $3100 so without them, so we can buy some new tires. The car in that shape is definately not worth $4000, but is worth those other prices I mentioned. It's a very clean inside and out car in person, just the tires are as bald as Vin Diesel's Head

If I remember right ( I bought my '95 SE 13 1/2 years ago), the spoiler was an option for all non-SE Maximas. And also - if I remember right - it was some ridiculous price like $900.

Another dead give away besides the non-white guages for SE-wannabes is the the third brake light in the rear window, or possibly a plate there where the third brake light would have been (if the spoiler light has been activated).

Also I believe that all SE's have the black exterior molding around the windows!
I am pretty sure on this! that and of course!
Peak your head in...... WHITE guages.... DONE DEAL!
That is saying that someone hasnt changed the guages ! which as time goes on.. is more and more common! Just run the VIN

99's have major reliability issues. Many 99 owners go though hell to track down stupid gremlins. For instance the coil packs usually go bad which from the dealer are $300-400. They have a different electrical system which is not as reliable as the other 4th gens. The chipped key is another royal pain in the ***.

99's do have a few issues, but are still really good cars. and as far as se's only having white gauges, check to see if the emblem says se limited. if so it will have a metallic look to the gauges. I have a 99 se-l with cloth, basic stereo, and auto. great car, did have a few gremlins to kill, but most can be fixed by hunting parts here or in a junkyard. my first suggestion to you would be buy it,get an oil change, have a tune up done and see how she blows by hondas.

I don't mean to hijack, but it looks like the OP got his question answered and I can't start threads yet. I'm going to look at a 1 owner dealer maintained 1998 5spd with 210,000 miles on it for $2000. Loaded with leather, etc. I'm good with a wrench, what do you think about it? What kind of servicing should I be sure to ask about or be expecting to do myself? I'm done a good amount of research on Maximas for the past several months and I'm aware of the beauty of the VQ30 and reliability in general of these vehicles. I do have a jeep as a backup vehicle, just looking for something more comfortable and better on gas. Thanks guys, appreciate it.

edit: I'm leaving in 20 minutes to check the vehicle out, thats why I tried to find the most appropriate thread to post this. Sorry to the OP.

My sister has a 1997 SE Max with white-faced gauges, spoiler and grey cloth seating. Not all SE's and GLE's are leather trim. My Max has grey cloth seating, spoiler, and black gauges, therefore, making it a GXE. Oh, and chrome handles and window lining (which I love btw). Good luck with the car (if you end up getting it)
