Is a 42 pound rim and tire, too much for the max?

Hey looking to get some rims but they weigh 42 pounds each. So my question is will they hinder my performance? And will they put wear and tear on my tranny? Should I just wait and buy some OEM 17's?

42 lbs ea? What are they made out of, granite I think that's pretty heavy. And would you have to add the weight of the tire to the 42lbs? If so, you're probably something like 65-70lbs a corner. IDK the spec/limit but that is an awful lot of unsprung weight at each corner. You might want to consider something else.

If it helps, tire rack has tire weights on their website (and probably wheel weights too for the wheels they sell). You might want to do a few back of the envelope calc's to figure out how much weight diff you're talking about between factory wheels and the 42lb ones. If it helps to know the weight of a bare factory 98 se wheel, I have a set in basement I can check. Ping my email and ask, and I'll take a look.

for 18s = not bad

If you are talking about the combo weight wheel+tire, that's close to the stock weight. The 215/55/16 is going to be 20-25lbs and the stock SE 16s are about 20lbs. Combine the stock wheel and tire and your at 40-45lbs.

that makes sense i got Enkei RP02-J 17x8s with tires weigh around 50lbs on a bathroom scale and those wheels are pretty light,

tires are fat and need to go on weight watchers

Yeah tires are surprisingly heavy...my rubberband 235/45/18s are like 22lb each. Combined with the 27lb muranos...yeah. Like mr****s said, boat anchors.

Nearly half the people in this thread think he's asking about the wheel weight alone

Yeah the stock SE rim is about 17-18lbs I believe...couple that with a 24lb tire and you get 42.

a 42 rim will hurt your braking, acceleration and gas mileage. i would aim for under 50 including tire weight, but even that is a big sluggish.

um sorry man first off way to be descriptive. "rim =rim"???

Second a wheel is what you call a rim

wheel + tire = wheel + tire.

Dont confuse people you will **** others off.

thank you, I agree.

rim=stupid word that should never be used IMO. Just call it a wheel!

and a wheel is not a "rim + tire" it's a wheel.

i got some 2002 SE wheels on my 97, upgrading from the stock 15 inch sawblades. i felt a HUGE difference in pull off the line, as well as braking. plus now, after a couple of weeks, im noticing a 20-30 mile-per-tank drop. they look great, but my performance has suffered too much....

the stock 15 inch sawblades weigh 16.5 lbs
the stock 17 inch SE alloys weigh 24.5 lbs

im going to be selling them soon and gettin some 14 lb 17" Koseis.

where are you buying koseis?!?! I wanted some, but tirerack didn't have 17x9's and I couldn't find any!!!

and yes 42lbs is pretty good. My combo is about 44-45, but I'm ok with that since they're 17x9's with 255s

it's not only the weight of the wheel that matters you are adding a wider and larger wheel. the force needed to move the wheel is staying the same yet the 17's are needing more force to move. so there fore you are slower and have worse mileage.

But good luck with thos Koseis

wider tires = larger contact patch = more rolling resistance BUT better grip, especially on high HP cars.
