I'm trying to replace the driver side axle seal for a 1999 Infiniti I30, which should be the same as a Maxima. I popped out the old seal and am trying to install the new seal. But the seal is not going in straight - it's crooked. Any ideas or tricks that will help?

 

If you can't find a large socket that straddles the dust lip of the seal, take your time and gently tap in the seal around the outside. Go slow rotating each tap 120° from the last.

the seal is easily damaged if tapped too hard.. = ( I learned.. the hard way...

 

dgeesaman's suggestion of a properly sized socket or a seal installer is your best bet. I've never done a seal install while the trans was on the car but I may actually be trying it today, and for the job I borrowed a seal installer from work which is basically a round flat steel thing that you bang with a hammer to try to evenly distribute the pressure you're exerting on the seal.
