What is the quietest rear section exhaust to replace the stock muffler?
What is the quietest rear section exhaust to replace the stock muffler?
My 1998 Maxima SE stock muffler finally rotted away. The piping still seems in good shape though. Is there a bolt on replacement rear section that is not obnoxiously loud? I don't mind if it sounded like a stock Mitsu Eclipse V6... I just don't want to sound like one of those lawn mower civics or have that deep drone that gives everyone in the car a headache. Any suggestions would be appreciated...
I'm having the same problem. My 2nd OEM muffler and B-pipe rotted away also, I replaced the b-pipe with a non resonated stillen pipe and left the stock muffler on, it was silent at every RPM and every throttle position. Now 6 weeks later the muffler is rusted away and sounds like a lawn mower.
What I've found so far...
I've heard the 5th gen is slightly louder and drones a little bit, it is not a direct fit. I'm having trouble finding a replacement 4th gen muffler that is truly original. The muffler I pulled off my car was a Nissan OEM calsonic replacement from a dealer and it was no where near the quality of the ones Nissan originally put on the cars welds are worse and the metal seems thin. It lasted 2 years maybe 3 at most and it was a Nissan OEM part so make sure you stay away from these. I have read a number of times that dynomax super turbo muffler is a good choice. I'm afraid to buy one because it could be a whole other story without a resonator.
What im wondering...
What mufflers sound good with a non resonated exhaust?
Anyone have any input on where they found a good 4th gen muffler?

If you plan on keeping the car for more than 2-3 years get a muffler with a lifetime warranty and get it from a place that will be around to honor the warranty. It is not unusual for an aftermarket muffler to fail after 2-3 years, hang on to the receipt.
The Walker is great, and if you purchase by May 30, they will give you a $50.00 rebate. The cost of the muffler is $158.00, and subtract the rebate it is a great deal, with a lifetime warr.

Ok I just got my 96 back from the shop for the exhaust work. My set up is as follows: Budget Y pipe, stock cat, Napa stock B pipe, and Walker quietflow muffler. The car is VERY VERY quiet, so far the set up is perfect. However I didn't notice much with the Y pipe?

the greddy evo 2 sounds really great but its not quiet like oem or dynomax superflow but it is quiet for a performance muffler.i would probably say 5th gen or dynomax for real quiet driving or greddy for a lil loud but yet not ricey sound. if i had a max and not a infiniti i would deff be rocking the greddy evo 2.
well i took out the cat on mine so its little bit louder than normal but not rice. when i had it in it was really quiet. it creates a very deep sound. sometimes matching the two 12's in the trunk lol. it looks realy good as well. mine is painted black with a gold tip but it comes chrome (bouht it like this). a lot of the 350z guys use them as dual.
you can also go on their site and listen to the sound clip on a no cat s2000 with dual. think of that sound but half the loudness

Best muffler I've ever had, but I just wouldn't really call it quiet.
g4nismo, what about straight pipes is going to make the Ops car quiet like he asked? I hear straight pipes with the car turned off works and you can't hear a thing.
im interested in this ques. aswell, i dont want anything loud on my car but i nice growl at WOT would be nice, I want to try one of the HKS silent mufflers but i hold my breath everytime i see the price for one of those and the fact U will have to get it str8 from Japan
if you get equal length headers, it'll clean up the noise output a lot more, dunno almost like a 350z sound i guess...
I also need a replacement OEM muffler. Autozone suggested the Bosal, but they said the car had two mufflers, center and rear, and that I needed to get them both. They quoted $117, and $150 for both mufflers. I haven't heard about a center muffler before which make for some skepticism. Would you keep the OEM tip or buy aftermarket?
