120K and a different sort of problem

So my 98 I30 is nearing in on 120k, auto VLSD. And its been doing this for a while, but has gotten worse recently. It always seems to idle a little low (700 ish) but when i go to slow down and get near stopping, or just start it up after its been sitting for a while, its rpms will drop to 500 or below, and it will just then catch itself, and jump over 1000k, but im afraid that if this gets even slightly worse, it will likely start stalling.

Any thoughts, its all stock minus Cattman muffler, and a few small electric things inside.

Thanks

I've been starting to notice the same sort of problems in my '95 GXE. Tell me, have you noticed any hard starts, jerky acceleration, or sputtering exhaust? It could be your one or more of your spark plugs has gone bad, or worse one or more of your coil packs has gone bad.

The fix might also be as simple as cleaning your throttle body, or installing a new throttle position sensor.

bt dubs: I changed the MAF a few months ago to fix a bucking/stalling problem. It wasn't until put in the new MAF that I noticed a sputtering exhaust. Changed 2 coil packs, front O2 sensors, engine coolant temp. sensor, TPS, cleaned TB, and put in new spark plugs. May have been overkill, but all of that fixed the bad idle and hard starts, and now my '95 Mimi gets 23 mpg.

clean the iacv....

but i was having problems like this too.....had a leaky hose....
-- look for some air leaks

---- also, i heard as a trick...

when searching for a leak, spray some WD40 around the hoses/gaskets and if the engine revs up then you've found your leak .....as in the WD40 is combustible and would burn off/increase rpm's when it hit the leaky section

--some "older" mechanics were doing it while working on a motocycle

-- i guess it's no worse than having the dirty air leak in and as long as it's not excessive...should be fine
