Tranny Guys step in!

Car- 98 se 5spd

Trans- 2000 open diff

Problem- grinding when turning and accelerating which is also speed related.

Diagnoses- jacked car off the ground, removed the wlees, started car and neither wheel would spin. Placed the car in 1st gear passenger wheel would spin and skip on occasion, turned the wheel while in first would completly stop spinning and grinding would start, then it would skip more. Did not see the driver side while testing.

thoughts?

Grinding sound like syncro clash?

Check to ensure that the axles are fully seated into the diff, first thing.

If the grinding sound happens when you turn the wheels while they are off the ground spinning, then you have an axle problem, not a tranny issue.

no not the synchro clash. the grinding happens in gear and in nuetral. and the axles are all the way in.

Might, might not. They're only spinning from internal drag.

I am not as great as pmohr is with transmissions but I was thinking of an axle issue as well... Syncho clash makes sense...

so i hit the road today. when i accel the grinding increases with speed then when i shift (clutch in) it goes away and then comes right back when i engage the gear. it comes and goes now. i thought axles too but i just replaced the drivers side with one from raxels so that didnt do it. ill replace the passenger side next to see if that does it.

has anyone had a problem like this?

With the wheels off the ground, does turning one wheel result in the other wheel turning smoothly and free of noise?

Can you get someone to drive it with the wheels lifted and put your hand on the tranny? I would expect you could feel the vibration if it's internal to the tranny and bad enough to be audible.

I suggest you change the gear oil, too, since what's in the gear oil will tell you a lot about what's going on in the tranny.

if it goes away when your clutch is in then its either the throw out bearing or selector fork platic bushings are work causing the selector disk to grind o the fork, never heard of it hapening but youll never know until you either take it apart or to a tranny shop.

whats strange to me is that it grinds like twisting metal even if my foot is not on the clutch. i can coast and make a turn and it sounds like the APC from aliens!
