Awesome idea! I definitely want a hardwired detector & concealed display setup like this. What detector has this remote display?

That looks great man. I hardwired mine like this:

I just ran the Escort Smartwire down to the fuse box and tapped into power and ground. I never thought to wire up the buttons though. I just use the mute button on the actual unit when I need to.

When the radar goes off, it makes a beeping sound alerting you someone is using radar/laser.

The mute button lowers/mutes that volume

Haha nope...I actually tried different settings when I was making a trip from Long Island to Boston and tried messing around with it (no X, etc.) but I still find it best to use the "Auto" mode. It works well enough for me on Auto, which is why I don't mess around with it.

It has been worth every penny too, only time it has failed me is when I got nabbed with a radar gun, and luck had it the cop was a family friend.

I've had mine run like that for about a year now. I just used a regular rj-11 phone cord and tapped power from the radio. Any time the radio is on, the radar detector is on.

I have mine on the advanced display... I don't remember the std. display really so I'm not sure of all the differences, but I know that the expert display allows you to see each different band of radar at the same time. (helps when there are two cops tag teaming people within 500 feet of each other and they are using different radars...) My detector has tourettes, so next time it freaks out...I'll take a pic of the advanced display. Oh, and did you turn POP detection on? It's off by default...

You could, but I wouldn't.

It needs a clear line of sight thru front and back windshields for laser detection (even though laser detection without jamming is pointless).

Also, typically the higher the detector is, the better its performance will be. I doubt you'd be hiding it in the ceiling, and I wouldn't hide my $250 dollar detector so that it ends up performing like a $120 one.

Just my $.02

i may be wrong but aren't there systems that have radar/laser detectors that go above you license plates?

IIRC, laser jammer systems, but possiby both. That's because cops aim the laser directly at the front or rear bumper. The laser is very focused and you'll only get a laser detection alert when the laser is being pointed at your car. Once this happens, it's too late, the cop knows your speed. That's why laser detectors are pointless unless they are jammers as well.

Radar is very different. Radar is not near as accurate/focused. This means two things: first, it's hard for a cop to pick out a car in a crowd with radar, and two, stray radar bounces everywhere and can be picked up by detectors from a long distance away.

If you're trying to say that there are "hidden" systems available, then yes. But I wouldn't try to hide one that wasn't meant to be hidden...but that's just me.

i see. i remember my friend had one that was completely hidden. i didn't know if that was by design or if it was hacked up. so whats a good (read: best) hideaway system?

I haven't done much reading on the custom install systems, but I'd check out escort, beltronics, and whistler. I'm an escort fan, and IMO, if they can make the best radar detector on the market (V1 surpasses it only in laser detection), their custom systems are probably pretty good...but they're not cheap. They have some custom install systems that incorporate both radar detection and laser "shifters." http://www.escortradar.com/shop.htm
