I've been driving a lot of newer cars with MPG meters and found that I can get a better gas mileage if I know what the MPG is, long story. I was thinking about getting something like this for my maxima

http://www.amazon.com/ScanGauge-Comp...4362525&sr=8-1

Has anyone had any experience with any of these are they any good? I've never known anyone to have one. Can I see more than just gas mileage such as maybe specific sensor readings? I was interested in this or maybe some software for a laptop doesn't anyone know any good software?

Not a bad price since it can check ecu codes and all that good stuff. I don't know how accurate the mpg will be. It is much more accurate to reset your mileage each tank and just divide the miles traveled by the gallons filled up. Though this only works if you fill up the tank to the max everytime

If I had to guess, it can measure engine load, so maybe you input the vehicle's weight and from there it calculates it based on engine load, the weight, the rate at which the vehicle is accelerating (since it measures speed), as well as RPM.

In theory I bet this could be calculated based off those variables, except if the car is going up or down a hill I can see that throwing it off.

You can use a vacuum/boost guage! The vacuum side is what you'll be using, tilt the throttle to read the highest vacuum and that will be your sweet spot! You can also find those MPG guages @ JcWhitney....I'm gonna be honest, I don't dog the crap out of my Maximas but I can only drive it like an old lady for a few days!!!!

I can't use it, my 96 isn't compatable with OBDII

and I think that the "cost of tank so far" feature would get depressing

What makes you think your 96 isnt obd2? All/most cars in the US are obd2 96+

ALL cars/light trucks sold new in the USA from 96- present have OBDII. Cars out side the US may not, learned that one the hard way.

It plugs into your OBD2 hookup near the fuse panel.

And Nissan was ahead of the game, as all 4th gens, (95 included) are OBDII.

Chrysler did it in 94 on the LH cars , and GM did it in 94 on the F-bodies as well IIRC.
I think most OEs did it on cars that were near their redesign, but didn't neccessarily put in the connector like Nissan did.
I still prefer to use the consult port.

I have a few friends with OBDII scanners and they don't fit the plug I have near the fusebox

The scanners that the autoparts stores have don't fit it either

the guy at autozone told me I was OBD 1

do they just have the wrong scanner?

That's because the OBDII connector is next to the glovebox.

No, it is in the standard OBDII location. to the left of the steering column under the dash. Below the fusebox as shown in your illustration.
only 95 has it in a different location.

That whats I meant, I was referring to 95's... Didn't see that he had a 96

The MPG meter on the A33B is off by 12-15%, and when you start modding, it gets worse.

2 -4 MPG on the high side.

4 MPG on a 24 MPG typical (calculated manually) =~ 16%, so, yup, worst case scenario.

Mine is even worse now since I've added Z33 injectors and an AFC.
