'zone starters - any good?

Been a bad week for starting. First my battery died. Now the starter has finally died. It has been iffy for a month or two.
My question: are Autozone starters any good?

I wouldnt get one myself. On my 96, i bought it in 05, and had to replace the starter in Dec. When i bought the car, i thought it looked awful clean, but it worked and i went on about life till Dec. I pulled the starter, and come to find out it was an "AZ Duralast" so, it lasted at least 2 years if not a little longer. Got an OEM here in town and been golden ever since. I would go OEM on the starter.

Go right ahead and get one from AutoZone..

If you can put up with the screeching noise it will make until it dies, then you will be fine.

Lifetime warranty is fine if you like downtime and changing parts for free.

I'd say just mking an educated geuss that 75% or more of people replace perfectly good starters. I have several customers that love me because I saved them so much money by spending 1/2 hour cleaning up a few connections really good, They would be: Both positive lugs on the starter/selenoid, the battery terminals, along with the chassis and engine ground. Most shops know this but purposely ignore it and simply use the practice of cleaning up all these things along with the new starter, because thay also like a 40% mark-up on the starter along with a straight forward repair that is very "fluffable" labor-wise as well.

Anyways, just wanted to point this out, because I have a gut feeling that you haven't performed a Voltage Drop Test

My car ate up two of them so far. Good thing there's the warranty on them. I pulled it and got the store to test and swap me out for another one.

I never had any problems with the squeeling at all. Only thing I noticed with them was when they started to die, it takes a little longer to get the engine to roll over.

If I remembered correctly, these starters have a different number of teeth compared to OEM.

most rebuilt starters/alternators that you find at the big chain stores are crap. they have a roughly 75% failure rate within the first year.
the 4th gen came from the factory with 2 different starter types. a 8 tooth and an 10 tooth. you can swap a 10 toooth in place of the 8, but not vice versa. the 10 tooth is the updated design to take care of some starting issues in early 4th gens where the car didn't start on the first crank.

damn right! my stepdad just went and got a starter and then an alternator because his 87 nissan pickup wouldnt start. still wouldnt and they test the batt and tell him its gud twice so when the car wont crank hes pulling the lil bit of hair hes got left out. i go over their finally and his negative batt ground is hanging on by a thread. and then the batt terminals had some sort of dull coating that werent letting it give any spark. i cleaned the posts with a wire brush and replaced the negative/ground wire and it cranked on the spot.

HELP PLEASE!!

I also have a 96 Maxima, 3.0L. It runs great, BUT - today, I went to start it up, and the car wouldn't start, it just kept turning over. After about 10 minutes of trying to get it started, it STOPPED turning over completely.

Now, it just makes a SINGLE "click" sound, (ONLY ONCE EACH TIME I TURN KEY, NOT REPEATED CLICKING)

ALSO: The battery & alternator are perfect. The windows, stereo, lights, everything works 100%. Just won't start..

What is wrong with my baby??? :-(

96 Maxima - Alloy Wheels, 15% tint, Bose system with two 10" pioneer subs & 600 watt amp, strobe lights, neons.. pimp!

Now if it would just start..

Meh...maybe Ive experianced the exception to the rule but I bought my Max almost 3 years ago, changed the starter because it was cheap and easy to do with a Zone starter.....been fine ever since, no screeching, no hot start slow cranks, nothing. I dunno though, perhaps Ive been lucky.

Starter solenoid is sticking, or your ignition switch is bad. Try hitting the solenoid with something, see if it frees it up.

If so:

Otherwise, it could just be a case of corrosion on the positive lead to the solenoid.

I tried that route and got hosed. The ebay starter died in a week and I ended up going to autozone and buying a duralast. Couldn't have my car being down again for another week.

The ebay starter ended up costing me $35 for return shipping, which the vendor did not cover.

I will never buy operation critical parts from ebay again, because of possible failure and down time.

At least if you buy local, you can get an exchange right away.

By the way, my duralast starter is 3+ years old and still works perfectly.

Um, they actually like 140 with the core so for 42 bucks more he can have one that day and if he has any problems with it a place to take it back to.

My starter tested good but wouldn't crank in car. Put an advanced auto parts one in and it has been running good no problems. Wonder if I could have cleaned it up a bit and kept the oem rollin.

In my opinion it's ignition or fuel related. You just kept cranking untill your battery didn't have enough juice to turn the starter. And that's when you get the click. The car needs a full 12.6 Volts (or something real close) to propperly start the car. It could be a bad connection somewhere but my vote goes for ignition switch or the fuel pump or associated switches and such. If the starter had just clicked on a full charge and not turned the engine or intermittently turned it I'd say starter but if it cranks odds are it's good.

mine did the same thing few months ago. We took it off and started testing it. even took it to the store for testing. It tested good . Well it ended up being that it would turn over but every other time and it didn't have enough power to start the engine. Put the new one in (rebuilt) and it fired right up.

The short answer is "no".

Lifetime warranties are not very helpful when the car is miles from nowhere, the nearest Autozone is closed, and by the way the car won't start.
