ABS warning light problem

Yes - I searched earlier posts and FAQs
some where helpful but I still have questions...

Problem:
Sometimes when I start the car my ABS warning light comes on.
At first this happened only occasionally, now it's happening more frequently.

There doesn't seem to be anything else related to this
(i.e. I saw a post where it came on with headlights).

When the ABS warning comes on it stays on.
Sometimes if I turn the car off and restart it will go off.

I took it to my mechanic and of course it didn't happen
and so they couldn't figure anything out.

Some posts suggest dirt is in the "sensor ring".

Questions:
So, couldn't I clean the sensor ring(s) out, and not have to replace them?

To clean (or replace) do I have to get the car up on a lift
- or can you get at them with a jack and removing the wheels?

Other than a dirty sensor ring, do any of y'all have any other thoughts?

Thanks.

i believe this is common. my light will come on for 1-5 seconds every time i start up. it will disappear and has never led to anything else. i think it means that the system is checking itself before you drive. i know it sounds silly, but try changing the air and fuel filters, pcv etc. see if this has any result.

Thanks
But this is not just a system check.
When it comes on it stays on.
It is happening more frequently now
and turning it off an restarting doesn't
cancel it out any more.

Have you done the diagnostics to see if any codes are stored?

I've never done that before, just checked the FAQ
Good directions, I'll try to get code tomorrow.
Thanks
