Where to drill hole in firewall?

I have a 1999 maxima and am trying to wire up an amp but this is the first amp/sub install I have done. I am looking for a good place to drill a hole in the firewall but I am not sure where. Can someone post a picture showing me where you have drilled a hole? Thank you.

I personally NEVER drill a hole through the firewall! I don't like the idea of doing it. Just look on the firewall and look for rubber grommets (I think that's what they're called) that have wires running through it and use those. I ran mine through one about 2 1/2 feet away from the drivers side. Perfect size as long as ur not running huge gauge.

Best way to go for running any wire is go through the harness gromet by the drivers side wheel well than to make a new hole.

Yea you can do that; but there are already holes in the firewall with wires running through it. Just use one of them so you don't have to drill anything. But if you want to drill go with Mistas idea.......

Don't drill if you don't have to. Check near the middle of your firewall to see if your 99 has this hole:

Not my picture, but my 95 had that same hole. I used it to run my amp wire and ground signal from my RPM switch to the 00VI. All I had to do was pop out the little rubber grommet/cap and then the rest was history!

the way i was saying is where the main harness is you dont have to drill whatsoever and it keeps your wires away from the engine heat its right under the splash shield by the drivers side front tire.

Exactly the one I used! Best one IMO.

Waste of time....The ideas already presented are the best. You don't have to drill anymore holes. You already have existing holes in the firewall; why would you want to add more?

There is a hole covered by a rubber plug in the middle area. I'm installing an amp as well and I didnt have to do any drilling to run the power cable into the interior. Now all thats left is hooking stuff up and crossing my fingers. My first time putting an amp and subs in btw.

^that's exactly the one that we're talking about! It's the best one. It's right there. Good luck with the install. It's very easy as long as you have a little knowledge. Make sure you run your rca cables on the opposite side of your others. A lot of people say it doesn't matter; but sometimes you'll get humming from them being together (in my experiences).

Not so sure if I'd follow the drill through hollow sounding spots advice. Then the poor guy might be back here a couple days later with a "HELP! BRAKES ARE SHOT" thread, like what recently happened to another member on here.

Try that existing hole in the center. If for some reason it doesn't work, you can look for the other one by the D/S wheel well.

On my 99 I have an indention for the hole in the picture but there is metal covering it. Is it ok to drill this still? Where will this hole enter the car? Would I be better off using the D/S wheel well? I can see where the wires go down the wheel well but I am not sure where they end up either.

You have metal covering up that hole? I've only seen rubber grommets. I'm not sure why it would have metal there so I wont give you an answer on that. But that hole leads below the dash on the drivers side. Look pretty much directly above the gas pedal. Is that metal piece screwed in or does it look welded on or anything like that?

100th post! woo-hoo!

It just looks like there is supposed to be a hole but a piece of sheetmetal is perfectly positioned behind the hole. I will try to take a picture of it tomorrow.

take a 1/4" tube or 5/16" tube insert the wire tip into the tube and push the tube thru an existing rubber grommet on the fire wall, and then simply pull your wire thru....
