New car...Problems. Solutions??
I bought a 1995 GLE recently knowing there were some problems.
1. Airbag light is blinking
2. tranny knocks when shifting out of 1st only.
3.takes a few flicks of the key to actually crank the car over.
4. Starter: will a 5 speed bendix gear fit into an auto?
5. Plate lights won't come on...changed bulbs
6. Leaking tranny fluid from seal...bad seal or bearings?
Am I better off changing it into a 5 speed since I have all of the parts?
Isn't there already a Y-pipe on the car stock? Whats the advantage of an aftermarket one?
Any feedback is good feedback....

1) there is a procedure for taking care of this, i am sure you will find it with a quick search
2) Change the fluid and filter but it might be at the end of it's life unfortunately
3) based on the vague description it sounds like a the ignition switch contacts are worn down.
4) see 6
5) check for corrosion on the terminals then check for power using a multimeter and if that doesn't help start tracking the wires back. I bet if there is a wiring problem it is in the trunk lid
6)sounds like your tranny might already be on it's last leg and 5speed > auto so might as well do the swap if you have the parts and the ambition
yes, there is already a y-pipe but it is very restrictive and the aftermarket part is good for about 12hp

dont drain ur tranny it will most likely kick the bucket if u do. +1 for new car. Next find these things out b4 purchase and save urself the hassle. did u bother to look the car over b4 u bought it?
Re your starting problem, if you're getting the dash lights on but the starter isn't turning, it may be the ignition switch. Get access to the switch (takes about 10 minutes), then use the key or a screwdriver on the switch itself. If it starts every time, the problem is probably a little slop between the slot in the switch and the flange on the key cylinder. Put a little piece of electrical tape inside the slot on the switch itself, to shim it up. I did that in January this year, and I've started perferctly ever since.
If using the key on the switch itself doesn't work, try shorting across the switch. If that's not the problem, check the neutral safety switch (I forget what Nissan calls it).
There are a ton of threads on this topic.

Thanks...but i'm going to keep this car...i'v put a bit of money on it. When i posted on Kijiji, I was asking for a project car and this guy called me sating he had 2 maximas. One was the GXE, and the other the GLE. So I decided to do up the GLE.
I'm not to worried about the airbag light for now, it just passed inspection and I got it liscenced so it's really only the starting issue which is preventing me to drive it, and the leaky tranny. Therefore if I do the swap, fix the starting problem, she pretty much good to go.
You guys are a good help, and the org has been a big influence on me since I started up. I tend to do WAY more DIY things. And i'm lookin to get a nice set of shoes and a y-pipe now. Does anyone think this intake will be any good....as in where will it fit due to the MAF sensor???
