96 GXE with 216000 miles
96 GXE with 216000 miles
No this is not a for sale thread, I am actually the buyer lol
Bought this 96 GXE 5 speed with 216000 miles for 2K from the first owner
Perfect factory paint, perfect interior, new Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S tires, new alternator, starter, ball join, front bushing, knock/O2 sensors with complete dealer services record. Only replaced shocks and clutch and it actually drives like a new car......eh...except ONE problem lol
Whenever I drive over a EVER-SO-SLIGHT bumpy section on the freeway. even with all the windows fully closed, the interior sounds/feels like one of the window is open. I know its hard to understand but ever try to open ONE window while you are on the freeway? The air would rush in and makes that rapid turbulence noise until you "balance " it out by opening a second window. I checked all the door and window seal and can not find any leak. I am suspecting it has something to do with the rear suspension that cause the body to move up and down rapidly?
Any ideas are appreciated.
BTW, being an owner of another 96 AUTO SE for the past 4 years I would like to make a little comparison:
1) A 5 speed is A LOT FASTER compare to the auto, even when the 5 speed has another 120K miles more on the odo
2) An auto even with y-pipe will NOT catch up with a stock 5 speed.
3) Y pipe does yield a lot more power specially with the 5 speed due to les drivetrain loss i guess, tires start to spin after 4K at first gear.
3) Auto get less MPG, specially around town. With the 5 speed I am getting 23mpg on mix driving and 28mpg with 50% highway within a tank.
4) SE does respond faster to steering input and corners a Lot flatter then the GXE.
5) Rear valve gasket SUCK, it leaked on both car lol

I'm trying to imagine what sound you're hearing, but I can't figure it out. Can you have a passenger take an audio/video and host on youtube? Also, how's the suspension parts, especially the struts, strut mounts, and all the bushings?

Sounds like it is time to get a passenger in the car to help focus in on the location. Do you have a wind deflector on the moon roof? Mine came loose one time and made BRRRRRRUUUUUUUUUPPPPPPPP noise at a certain speed, around 50-55 mph. Made the noise when accellerating onto the highway.
Good luck.
Good luck.
Here in Southern California, if the car's in excellent shape, $1900 is about the right private seller price. So $2k isn't that far off. The true cost of a car is the price it was sold at.
Personally, I probably woulda offered $1150-ish. That's offer price, not necessarily buying price. And if I was the seller, I'd ask $3300 and have quality buyers come and look, and not bother with lowballers like myself. Haha. That's how I've been buying and selling cars, and seems to work. I get a great deal either way, as long as I'm not rushing or buying on emotion. It's 1 reason why it took me 4 years to find my car.

I wish it has a sunroof as it is a GXE
Here in LA, 2 grand for a car that runs and looks as good is a true steal. I actually sold a 93 Civic sedan in perfect condition to a co-worker for 2K and use the $ to bought this car. What an upgrade...
Already made a few 100+ miles trip and planning to take it to snowboard this season
anyway found the cause tonight, apparently the rubber thingy that goes between the trunk and the car has worn out, which allow the trunk to move up and down ever so slightly at high speed and cause the fluttering sound. I "shimed" the bushings with some left over 3M door seal and its dead silent now.
Um....... ok not quite dead but you get the idea.
