Change clutch now or wait?

Current Setup: Exedy Stage 2 Clutch
- Already had slight clutch chatter after initial install.
- 30k miles of hard driving on this clutch so far
- clutch still grabs hard despite the new LOUDER chatter

Problem:
Bro took it on a long trip to Wisconsin, Came Back and there is a loud a$$ clutch chatter noise now.
- Noise is a constant chatter/whirr when the clutch pedal is not pressed down.
- When clutch pedal is pressed to the floor, the chatter goes away.
- 3rd and 4th gear normal driving gives a vibration through the shifter.

Things I have noticed so far:
- I have done a quick inspection and peaked into the clutch area
- I see that the TO Bearing has created a deep groove on the pressure plate.

What do you guys think? Can I wait on this to do in the Spring? Is the clutch even my problem?
- I'm hoping it just needs a new clutch but it could possibly be the transmission's input shaft bearing. (I already have the 5th gen clutch setup on hand)
- I'm thinking it is a problem caused by the TO bearing because it has dug into the pressure plate noticeably which would cause more play for the TO bearing to bounce around even more.

Damnit.... That's not what I wanted to hear... Anyone else who's experienced this?

Yea, my input shaft bearing was going as well, but it was gradual thing. I haven't really heard of something like this happening all of a sudden unless it is a catastrophic failure. My input shaft bearing was pretty bad and even then the transmission was quite smooth. If you have shuddering due to a transmission probablem, that can't be a good sign at all. I wouldn't rule everything else out though.

How are the engine and transmission mounts? It is possible if there is a broken mount you might get a chattering feel.

sorry to say but that tranny on its way out. the reason u feel vibration on 3rd & 4th gear
is because those gears are striping away because the input shaft play on the bearing . so say bye bye but take it from me dont rebuild i had had some maxima guru charged me 1200 and 5 months tranny blew up thats jeff at maxium tuning he sucks but anyway just find a low mileage limted slip tranny and call it a day

I have poly motor mounts for the motor and I've checked the tranny mount which is still in good condition.

Hmmm... Damnit this is my second tranny... I may just have to wait until the spring and get my All Trac project up and running and then sell this thing.... Anyone interested in JWT ECU, MEVI and so on?

when my input shaft bearings went bad it was a loud clunk clunk if i remember correctly. brought it down to a tranny shop guy listened to it and said yup input shaft bearings.

as said above find a used tranny and swap her in there. easiest thing to do.

Yeah that's the thing... How do I know if the used tranny doesn't have the same problem? Has anyone replaced their input shaft bearing? How expensive is it to DIY? How difficult can it really be? Open up the bellhousing, replace it, set bearing load to specs, shim if needed and put back on right?

This is similar to what my '97 just did. PO put in a clutch @~90k and now it has ~ 142k. I heard a bit of a whine for a day or two and before I could check it out, I had a loud chatter in 1st-4th but no noise with the clutch depressed or after shifting into 5th. I thought it sounded like the TO bearing, but I got very loud real quick. My friend who does trans. work says broken input shaft or bearing.
So I'm in the same boat, rebuild it or buy a junk trans. that may have the same issues. Does anyone here know what other trannys will mate easily to a 4th gen, e.g. 5th gen, 6th gen, I30 etc... I have learned here that you do have to change the drivers side axle if you go from an open diff (which I have) to a limited slip (VSLD) trans. Hell, if i have to put in a new trans. why not a 6 speed if it's an option?

6 Speed trans will work however you'll have to fabricate the tranny mount. I believe it's in the All Motor Threads.

5 Speed VLSD/AE does need a new driver side axle.

Because this IPS is such a common problem, I'm surprised there hasn't been a quick detailed how-to write up on this.

I'm sure I could figure it out myself, but it would probably take a lot more time and research than I have. I'll have to get a replacement tranny before I do the rebuild on this one.

^^^Dude seriously? Lemme know where you have found a 95-01 Maxima Open or Locking Diff Manual tranny for $300 shipped cause I've been looking at all the wrong places then.

I replaced my manual tranny a year and a half ago. That 96 tranny costed $500 picked up which is by far the cheapest that I had found it.

Yea, I'll take some of that $300 tranny action myself. Best price I've found is $700 for a junker w/90 day warranty. Rebuilts go for $1,300...sheeesh! Guess I'll rebuild mine. At least I'll know what I have.

Lols.. Torgus must be referring to an Auto Tranny.

Hey Beez, How many miles were on the JY LSD tranny that you bought? Was the VLSD still working correctly (Many threads say the LSD dies out around 100k miles making it act like an open diff tranny)

If my deal w/ BassBreaker (Seems like an awesome guy) goes through then I should have an LSD tranny shortly. Then I'll take out my Open Diff, rebuild it (Possibly Quaife it if I could find something cheaper). Then take the VLSD off and rebuild it to sell at a fair price to a fellow orger.

Seriously these JY's are charging an arm and a leg for these manual trannies. We all should just hold onto our trannies and sell them within the org!
