Cool! I'll go try it out later along with programing the remote. Is there any way to test the remote at home? I have a multimeter.

Not really, unless you have equipment to identify RF signals.

As far as opening all doors, that's a function of the BCM I believe. If keyless isn't working and other BCM controlled functions like opening all of the doors isn't working, it could be a BCM problem.

The all door open function (whats the proper name?) worked before I tried programing the remote. I must have reset it while I was doing that. Just checked the amb and it works nicely. Pepboys has a rf ir checker by the cash register. I'll give it another try.

congrats on the 99!

the only problems i had on mine were the knock sensor and 2 bad coilpacks.

If you have plans of doing an 00vi/mevi, i'd suggest replacing the knock sensor while you're at it! That thing was a pain...

Other than that, this car is solid! Thinking about selling it though for an '05 Subaru Legacy GT... stealth like maxi, but AWD!

Congrats on your 99!! I have one with 160k. Replaced coil packs with used ones for $50. O2 sensors, alt,egr valve+sensor, both front axles, knock sensor. But it's a 5 speed!! If you can get your hands on a manual, regardless of the year, ponce on it!!

Something weird happened today, the two turns to the right door lock feature started working again. The alarm went off as I opened the door with the key as it used to and I turned it off. Then I tried turning the key twice to the right and all the doors unlocked like they used to. It took a while to start and the batt light came on and turned off a couple of minutes later.

congrats about your 99 maxima
I got my 99 maxima a month ago.
The orange service engine light is on and I think it needs new spark plugs, coil packs, maybe both.
Similar to your problem, when driving, it delays in acceleration and when stopped at a red light, the RPM goes below 500 and it feels like its about to turn off.
I like how people here put pictures and info about changing the packs and plugs, but I am not very mechanically savy. not at all. So I am waiting for the right time to fix it. Maybe once I find the exact codes.

Most likely the coils, yes.

You can pull the codes yourself for free, only takes 5 minutes.

They're extremely simple to change - http://www.infinitihelp.com/diy/i/pr...eplacement.htm

Should be able to hit at least 250,000 miles no problem if you treat her right.

How much did you pay for the car Quickywd01, how many miles?
I bought a 99 Gxe 4 months ago for 2700 with 160,000, but i had to do about 800 dollars in repairs, mostly trying to take care of the oil leaks, the service engine light and replacing a bad coil, and and the rest in small things like windshield wipers and hood lift support, and i still need to replace my power antenna

Don't be surprised if you need a knock sensor too. I guess mine didn't like what the coil was causing. At least it's not really expensive like my friends 1mz.

Yep, especially with the sc on there. I'm using his ScanTool so when I drive back from school (ny-nj), this weekend, which is about a 140 mile round trip I'll be able to check what’s going on with my coil issue. I swapped coil 2 & 4 with each other to see what will happen. Those plugs looked clean and "white" but I will be replacing them all in the near future for my 60k service. Should I buy an autozone coil or ebay? Since I will need to replace the ks and I read I will need a swivel u-joint adapter for my socket which one will be good for the job?

I went to the nissan dealer service today. For half an hour they couldn't diagnose properly but the DTC result:

p0300 - multi cyl misfire
90325 - knock sensor/circuit

the good news is I didnt pay them jack
the bad news is that I am back at point A again and do not know what I should do.

also, how bad is the coil pack situation? do I have to treat it right away?

these punks wants 80$ per coil pack and they charge 90$ an hour for labour....this reception dude told me it takes 2 hours just to get to the rear packs

the guy even told me that "you won't know for sure what the issue is......it could be fuel injectors, it could be other things" but I think he's just trying to scare me to bring it in or so I hope.

So far from what I have read you can have a coil pack problem which means you just replace the coil pack(s). A spark plug problem which means you just replace the spark plug(s). Then it could be a little more complicated like a wire harness problem or fuel injector problem but don't freak out yet because it could be simple. Save the money and start reading. Try the search thing at the top and select advanced. Then just select 4th gen at the right when you get into advanced search. Then type in whatever you want to look for in the search in the top left. Like coil pack, your cel code, etc. Then read through the threads that show up. The more you read, the more it will become more clear and simple. You will then realize that it's simple to replace the coil packs and spark plugs etc. You can recover the codes from your car yourself by either using a scantool like a handheld scanner or cable and laptop or you can use the screw right on your ecu. You turn it and there's a little led that flashes the code at you. Then you can go about fixing your car yourself. There is info about all this here that I have read in the course of a few days. Along with the info people also post how they fixed it. My best advice to you would be to just read start reading a few threads and go from there and ask questions on anything you don't understand. This way lazy people who just want your money won't be able to misinform you because you can remove and replace your rear coil packs and spark plugs as well as the knock sensor without removing the manifold.

Your Nissan service center fails at life, really.

You can replace the rear coils quicker and easier than the front (if you still have the front coil cover in place). See my link above again, you'll see how easy it is. Book time is probably .5 or so per coil, but it can be done in under 5 minutes.

So they didn't actually test or swap coils, test the injectors, do any sort of diagnostics? Though with a '99 I'd be surprised if it wasn't your coils.

I have been reading the links and instructions over and over again...because I haven't touch a car mechanically before, I fear I might damage the car in the process of changing the sparks and coil...but so far the reading has been real helpful

with respect to the dealer, I went half an hour before they close thinking that it would be more than enough time to find out what is wrong with it.....the only thing I got from them was that some of the coils appeared taken out from a junk yard because they looked old and had man written markers on them....and the code they gave me wasn't specific, only that its a multi cyl misfire.

The more I check into this forum the more I am headed toward convincing myself I buy 6 coil packs and 6 NDK platinum or copper sparks and do everything myself....the only thing is its super cold out here.

It's NGK, and you should, it's extremely easy. Not really too much you can damage if you don't force anything together.

When I was checking out my front coils and spark plugs I had a tough time with the coil pack cover. I first tried one of those multi hex wrench tools but the bolts were on there so tight that I was afraid I would snap it. Then I used a regular single hex wrench to get them off and they were on there tight but I just put my weight on it and got them off. Don't do this at night like I did. I lost a double screwdriver bit and it's in the bottom of my engine bay somewhere if it didn't fall out. If you feel real cold then after each one go inside to warm up.

Good advice...I wont try to force things through...with the right specified tools, I should be ok. does it matter much if u get Prenco brand, or OEM for coils? which brand did you use?

Welcome to the 99 club, I have a 99 SEL. So far no major problems with the coilpacks, or KS. Just had a tuneup and UDP installed less than 6 months ago. BTW spend the extra $$ for a spare key, the mechanic lost mine, the only one i had. (the chip fell out of the other key ) They had to trailor it to Denver, i was without the car for 4 days. Current mileage 143k and still going strong.

BogardiDough I didn't buy a coil yet because I am waiting to get back home this weekend to use my friends scantool to confirm the problem. When I buy a coil it will be off ebay. They are about $40 shipped. I couldn't find anyone posting that the ebay ones suck.

trand71 Thanks! I'm loving it. The KS went because of the misfire so it's not its fault. I also need a right rear door molding and clips or whatever is used to attach it, anyone know the cheapest place to get one? I taped the holes up for now. After a few stops from high speeds the rotors were wobbling so I'll get new blanks and "performance" pads like hawk hps or whatever works nice on the street. And new tires. But that's all this summer because I can't do work in this weather.

Scary to read about all the stuff that can go wrong!

I bought my 1999 ES new and now it has 160,000 kms on it. Its been trouble-free, never been back to the dealer.

I put plugs in it a month ago, just in pity.

Original brake pads that must be made of kryptonite!

It did need a battery in 2007, but other than that.....tires, oil and filters.

I don't really look at the coil pack problem as a big thing. Just crappy coil packs it seems. Look at all the maxima's that have high mileage. People have 200, 300, even 400,000 miles on them. It's a great car. 160k km is just a 100k miles. It's just broken in. Seems like if you take care of it, it will take care of you.

LOL. There are no symptoms.... You max will decide one day just not to start, and for no particular reason at all.

You'll then have to have it towed to Nissan, then they reprogram the key(s) etc, and collect a nice and easy $200+ from you....

Your car won't start. To fix it, you tow it to the Nissan dealer (or the location of the closest CONSULT-II) and have it repogrammed.
