My compressor clutch is shot. I'm searching for a new or rebuilt one with no luck. Can any one point me in the right direction.

Is it the clutch or the compressor itself? If the compressor freeze up, the clutch would slip too.

 

It is the a/c compressor clutch. When the a/c is off you hear the bearings making excessive noise, when you turn on the a/c most of the noise goes away.

Clutch is hard to find as most of the replacement compressors comes with clutch installed already.

The clutch comes off with a special tool. Kind of a "Y" with a key at each tip that fit into holes in the clutch face. Then turn the center nut to get it off. My old failed compressor is actually still around but I have no way to get the clutch off.

 

Nissan has the clutch only for $425.00.

 

Autozone has it for less than 300 complete won't have to rebuild anything. I just did it

I got my factory compressor from Meridian in San Diego. Although clutch is not listed, it's worth a try.

Yes, the compressor don't need to come off the car. You can get to it from the right side wheel well.

In this pix I dismounted it to get the alternator off but left all the hoses intact.

 

I just had the same problem with mine. I just replaced the whole compressor with a rebuilt one though. I found it for $145 for the reman compressor. It was from a shop in Van Nuys. If you are in so cal id reccommend you go there.

 

it sounds like the issue is the pulley bearing.

that being the case, just the bearing can/needs to be replaced.

remove the compressor clutch plate and the pulley.

take the pulley in to a local A/C shop.

They can press out the old bearing and press in a new one.

the cost should be somewhere b/t $30 and $60.

You can contact him (you might get "mud" discount if you pm him directly from the forum - mud users usually take care of each other there.). Following the thread, you may even get him to press the bearing on.

just take the pulley to an A/C shop... they'll have the bearing.

for crap's sake... there is no factory in Malasia making A/C pulley bearings for only the Nissan Maxima to subsequently supply them only to the pulley bearing underground blackmarket.

that bearing is used on tons of cars across lots of makes and models.

the A/C shop will have it.

they may not stock it as a bearing for a '99 Maxima A/C pulley but if the one they have is the same size and type, who gives two sh@#s.

that's why you need to take the pulley to them... so they can properly size and type the bearing that's be coming out of your pulley.

 

According to my mechanic it can be done, but often the compressor fly wheel easily warps from heat when it seizes. He stated it is more reliable to just spend the extra money and do right with a new clutch.

 

My a/c clutch was shot too, and I just went to a local junk yard and picked mine up for 100 dollars. and it worked perfect! Maybe try calling around, you might be lucky and find one in working order.
