ecu question

got a call the other day from my mechanic and he told me that after being on the phone with nissan techline they concluded that my two nessed up crank sensors caused my ecu to go bad so now i am on the search for a new ecu.

my mechanic said i can grab an ecu from a 96 or a 97 maxima as long as it was from an se model and that it was manual. but as i started searching and finally found and ecu and gave them a call they asked me for the service number of my ecu to match it.

so my question is do the service numbers of the ecu's have to match up?

Not that I am aware of, no. You just can't use an ECU from a 99' IIRC. 95 - 98 should be ok though. Also, the MT and AT are different, just bare that in mind.

Not sure that they have it just right either mate. Not very likely that a CPS and CKPS would cause an ECU to go bad. Maybe the other way around I could see.

Also on a side note - I don't know there's any difference in the trim level (GXE / SE / GLE) for the ECU.

Yea, never had a problem mixing and matching ECUs with different numbers on them. 95-98 are interchangeable (with regards to actually getting the car to run, emissions are a completely different matter), '99 is the odd man out.

The only trim difference you're going to find is the speed limiter, and on 4AT cars whether or not it will control the electric front mount.

so any ecu from a 95 to a 98 would work in my car as long as it's a 5 speed right?

To do nothing other than have the car run? Sure, most likely. To have it run without CELs? Just make it easy on yourself and go with the same year ECU.
