Starters & Alternators

I have owned my 95SE since day 1. The original starter died today at 122,750 kilometres (76,277 miles) and has now been replaced with a rebuilt one.

I still have the original alternator in the car and have never had a problem with it. I would have thought that the alternator would have quit first.

What is the experience of other 4th Gen members regarding the timing of starter/alternator replacement. Obviously, most members these days are not the original owner of the car, but any feedback is appreciated.

I have had virtually no problems with this car, touch wood.

The car is a 5-speed with mostly highway miles on it and the front brakes have never been touched.

I only replaced the rear pads and calipers going on 4 years ago because of my own stupidity. I hadn't used the parking brake for about 5 years and the right rear caliper seized.

My starter went at about 213K miles. Alternator went around 200K miles.

Were you the original owner? I am hard pressed to think that the original starter and alternator would last that long.

That's pretty good starter-wise. It looks like my alternator will go sooner rather than later.

I strongly suggest you buy the best possible alternator.

My starter lasts 11 years, two starts a day, 6 days/week. I replace the solenoid and brushes, it is working like new again.

96 with about 165K. I've replaced 3 or 4 starters, still on the original alternator <furiously knocking wood>.

Perhaps it is the luck of the draw with some of these electrical components. I too will be furiously knocking on wood with respect to the timing of my alternator replacement.

Just replaced my Starter (again)

Original owner of car. My first starter died at 100k and the second (rebuild) after an additional 80k. As for my alt: I had it changed (due to a recall).

I am a bit concerned at the idea of changing out the alternator as it has been over 150k for the one in my car at the moment (knock on wood). So I'm greatly interested in what other people are reporting on this.
