I rock the half & half on my A33B. Stock airbox, straight MP. The sound alone is worth it. It's very smooth too.

That's what I wanted to hear. I should have consulted you in the first place; I think you've tried just about every setup there is

I have to ask now that I've seen it: is the air box bolted in? (i.e. the 3 bolts at the bottom)

Have you tried using the stock midpipe along with the lower intake pipe going through the fender? I am currently using that setup and it seems to be the best. I've tried several different ways, and this seems to work great.

I'm primarily going for thermal effeciency here in addition to a bit of sound. Being able to use cheap panel filters is also a plus. I may make a new scoop though, because the factory one has some less-than-optimal design points.

Went to install mine tonight and realized two things:

1. My eBay midpipe is indeed curved at one end.
2. I don't have enough couplers. I only had one included with it from the previous owner that was usable, and it's an ugly blue color anyway.

Going to Lowe's tomorrow to buy some nice black couplers and painting the midpipe flat black.

http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...b50a98b6a3.jpgHere is a picture of my set up. The air box is still bolted in. I had to trim the end of the intake a little to make getting it on an off easier. It fit before I trimed it but was a little too long. Been working great for years nice and quite untill I cut the bottom of the air box off last week.

so I was just doing some basic cleaning around my engine, and I had been toying with the idea of buying an intake, because my stock intake is pretty much trash it just floats around on my air box and really isn't sealed at all. Anyway I decided to take it off to see if i could do something to seal it off better. I decided to experiment and took a drive with the oem intake off and the air just being sucked into the air box instead. Now my car sounds much better, but would it be better if i just sealed off my oem intake and put it back on and lose that good sound. Or leave the oem intake off. I figured it would be better to leave it off since it is such a larger opening and the air being sucked in at the airbox probably isn't much cooler than the air at the front of the engine versus next to the engine.

no its sucking air from the opening on the side of the air filter box, that the oem intake usually attaches to. It basically looks like "lightsout's" setup except stock. If you look at his picture of his engine, his oem intake is removed. That's what I did.

Ideally if you're using the stock air box, you also want to use the scoop. The scoop draws in much cooler fresh air from the front of the car. Someone explained the noise the intake makes before in a much more scientific way than I possibly could, but essentially the noise = a bad thing, not a good thing. Not a "hurt your engine" bad, but a "bad for performance" bad.

well then hmmm i guess I'll find a way to get a better seal between my airbox and the scoop instead. Maybe I'll disconnect the scoop from the scoop resonator so that i can still have a little bit of that low end growl.

Im using a mid pipe from a 2000 q45. it is big enough for pathfinder TB (i dont have TB yet) and it connects perfectly for the DEK to 4th gen airbox. The bend in pipe that is. it also looks STOCK...

I am thinking of going with a short ram setup. What did you use for that mounting bracket on top and where do I get it?

currently im in the same boat as Rosso, when i bought my Max the Intake Scoop was missing. I never really bothered to find a replacement, the car runs just fine and i have been reading these intake threads since i got the car so id rahter upgrade instead of just put an OEM one back in. And right now in the middle of winter you really cant tell the diffrence.

That's what a true CAI is. It brings in outside (not from within engine bay) air.

That's definitely a risk, but there are ways to mitigate that with valves and filters.

Not to mention that you'll only suck in a negligible amount of water unless the filter is completely submerged.

I've been running the PR Short Ram with K&N filter for like 2 years.. I have the lower pipe (its a CAI setup) but havent used it. I've heard so many mixed reviews about the intake setups, I haven't bothered. I'm running a MEVI, TS ECU, lightweight crank pully, stock rev limiter, stock internals, WS ypipe, greddy catback..

Do you think Im better off leaving it short ram, or going full CAI?

I finally got off my butt and spent the money on an eBay intake to get couplers. I'll try the setup out as soon as they get in and let you guys know my impressions. I'd like to do one last fun thing with the car before I sell it! I doubt I'll spend the money to do a comparison dyno, though, since the car is being sold.

Intake parts finally got in yesterday and all I can say is FAILURE. I am really saddened by just how low in quality these intakes are getting. I had to modify one of the couplers to even get it on the MAF and the ports on the tube aren't the right sizes (the one for the valve cover hose was the same size as the IACV! ). On top of that, the ports are placed in positions such that I can't get the couplers on far enough to make anything fit. I tried the other intake tube I had laying around and it was too awkward to work, too.

Long story short, neither intake tube is a suitable length. They keep the top half of the air box from bolting to the bottom half by about 0.5". I considered cutting some length out of one of the tubes, but it would either compromise the bend (which is needed) or take away even more length near the ports, which wouldn't allow the couplers to fit properly anyway.

I'm abandoning this project because I'm selling the car so it's not worth spending a bunch of money trying to get the right size tube with the ports positioned right. Glad I spent the money

I'm looking at GTO's The retros aren't currently for sale since the car currently has no decided fate, but send me a PM if you're seriously interested.

I guess I shouldn't have been surprised, huh? Thing is, years ago when you bought one of these kits on eBay they were actually half decent

I am a big fan of the stock resonator box with CAI tubing going into fender. Kevlo911 is also a fan if I remember correctly.

Dirty as heck but you get the idea.

Im a bit of an OEM junkie.. so i used nissan parts...

2000-2004 q45 (plastic) intake tube between tb and maf.

it has two ports for big hoses.. 1 is connected to the engine breather. other big one is closed off.. and a small air vac tube for the little things.

fits perfectly snug between pathfinder tb and maf as well cause the tb end is big in diameter.

I might even use this for Supercharger cause the accordian piece bends straight forward... hmm...

.. well yea it can be 1/2 with a cone filter.. Im using a drop in k&N filter because i turned away from the ram setup

im using it to eliminate vaccume box between TB and MAF & well it does fit PERFECTLY for a DEK swap in A32 with stock box.

good diameter.

also has ports for breather hoses.

OEM quality and doesnt get as hot as the metal pipes..

works with Pathfinder TB without those rubber couplings

I used to use a ram air setup... for a week.. it was loud... but thats really about it... I went back to this setup cause i felt when i WOT-ed while driving there was more of a noticable pull. possibly from the collector under the battery tray... I dont know maybe in my head... no dyno numbers...

but im in the process of setting up the intake so it feeds from the opening on the driver side where there used to be a fog light =) that should give an interesting ram effect esp. highway driving.

Homer I like your idea, I wish it applied to my situation more I just today decided to try and find a way for this to work since I'm keeping my car. I read over my old posts, though, and can't remember exactly what I needed to do in order to make this work. Guess I'll have to take it all apart again and make some measurements.

I looooove how my car sounds, but the intake is far too quiet. I just don't want the obnoxious loudness that an open filter results in on the factory manifold.
