It shouldn't be any harder to get to the nuts on the Y with an auto.

Have you not looked for it with a light?

All it takes is a swivel...

you can only see 5 out of 6 on my wife's 1998 maxima gle auto!

yeah i looked with a drop-light and a flashlight and a mini mag light and a mag light.

i know it is behind the heat shield. i have been trying to get the heat
shield broken off and out of the way. i have 90% of the lower portion of
the heat shield broke off. still trying to get the top portion of the heat
shield off.

i was just wondering if there was an easier way

i am thinking about putting a jack underneath the motor and unbolting the
rear motor mount and unbolting the crossmember on the rear side. maybe i will be able to reach it that way?

i even tried drilling a hole in the upper heat shield but that didn't work.

i have an air compressor and air chisel tried that
i tried sawzall
i tried grinder

i need a torch to cut off the remainder of the heat sheild

it is hard to get to because i have it on the concrete driveway and
it is up on jackstands

Seriously?

You don't need to do any of that. Again, all it takes is a swivel.

Absolutely no need to go sawing, grinding, drilling, torching just to remove a damn Y.

How does that make it more difficult? I do all my work in my driveway or garage. On jackstands. Including dropping the tranny to replace the rear main seal.....

i asked for 97-99 auto owners who have dropped their stock y-pipe!!

looks like you guys are all driving 95-96's except the dumb *** troll with the a32 sig. no wonder i stopped coming to maxima.org!

i have worked on many 95-96's. i could see all 6 studs/nuts on those cars!

again...

on my wife's 98 gle auto i cannot see the 6th one. it is blocked by the upper heat shield on the y-pipe. you cannot access it unless you drop the crossmember or cut away the heat shield.

unless you have pulled a y-pipe off of a 97-99 gle auto i didn't want
your smart *** comments!!!

i have done all my work in the driveway too. trust me i have worked on more maximas and cars than all you idiots combined.

just saying it is harder working off of jackstands when you are trying to knock the heat shields off of the y-pipe. would be alot easier on the lift (more room to move around)

this forum used to be helpful/useful back in the day. now it is full of a bunch of smart
*** newbie trolls that replaced the stock intake and y-pipe on their parents maxima and think they are mechanics now. stop whoring up my thread with useless replies!

And you actually want to get help, acting like that?

Calling me a 'dumbass troll'? Hmm...yep, definitely a troll. And I do drive a '95, FWIW. Good old personal attacks, not very well accepted on the org (you should know that, being here since '01).

No real reason in throwing my creds out there, let's just say I highly doubt you've worked on more cars than all of us combined, if you include me in there.

If you want to tear up the car just to get a nut off, go ahead and do so.

thanks for all your wonderful help guys.

i took a hammer and chisel and beat the upper heat shield out of the way.

wow look at that i can see the last stud/nut!!

before i started removing my y-pipe, my heat shield was butted up against my crossmember so i couldn't see the last nut/stud.

removed the upper heat shield and now i am done.

good input "know it all's"

you guys have been great i will be back soon

I remember mine sucking a bit but that was because all the nuts were corroded and I had crappy extenders that I broke before I got the nuts off...

I fail to see what the big deal is/was. I helped Ptatohed do his ypipe on his 99 Autotragic and it was a piece of cake. A swivel like Pmohr said is all that is needed to get to any tricky bolts.

I'd hate to see what you'd say about installing a set of headers......

damn.....i don't remember doing anything but taking a swivel to it. Only thing i did wrong was that i was using air tools, while unbolting the y-pipe from the cat, i had the gun to tighten instead of unscrew, so i stripped the crap out of that bolt and had to take it to a shot to torch it off...::sigh::

Heat shield can stay on. All you need is a swivel extension. It's not that bad. I can do it by feel now. I've taken my pipes off a good 5 times lol.

Installing headers isn't all that hard once your remove the UIM and cross member.

I have a lift so for me it's mad easy.

Screw the crossmember. Pop the UIM and rear valve cover, easy as pie.

I like the rear valve cover because it only takes 5 minutes to R&R, and gives you an extra few inches that help out a bit.
