Stubborn key in ignition

When I had this issue, the situation was a locked steering column. so just a giggle and ignition sequence.

But now with an unlocked column, I am having terrible difficulty. So I switched to my duplicate copy key, go figure, and times are a little better.

I tried using dry lead graphite on key and even into the ignition.

Still problems.

How can one deal with this small but troublesome annoyance?

Download a FSM and you will see a diagram.

Once you get the plastic cover off you will see that it is not too hard to change.

I have had two keys that when they got worn they don't work well. If I got a new duplicate key made it worked fine.

You may want to try going that route before you invest time and money into new cylinder.

Well I am using the rarely used duplicate but still having some problems.

I guess the dealer can make new keys using the VIN.

But in how to thread, many changed the electrical not mechanical part of the ignition switch (PART#48750-1E411) and that is much cheaper. well $60 OE.

Perhaps just get the complete assembly from the auto wereckers for $78.

The dealer likely no longer has your key codes on file, there have been many posts about people trying to get new keys cut at the dealer but have been unable to.

I can now say the original nissan key is worn out.

The duplicate works fine and for $3 made another dupe, which works fine.

Just remember, if you just keep making duplicates every time your key 'wears out', soon enough even a brand new cut won't work in your ignition cylinder.

I don't think you have to worry about that. If you wear down that much keys, your worn ignition cylinder will probably have enough slack to allow for that.

Glad to hear that solved your problem. Don't know why this happens but I'm on my third key in 11 years and the new duplicate keys have always worked great.
