96 GLE power steering noise
I just bought a 96 GLE with 80k miles on it. It recently stared making a whinning noise that I cant figure out. We the car is idling and no hands on the wheel, the power steering system makes a whinning sound. If I move the wheel to the right or left for an inch or two and hold the wheel, the sound goes away. When I release the wheel, the sound comes back. I checked the fluid level and its OK and there are no leaks from the rack and pump. The belt is OK and tensioned properly. I can't figure it out. Does anybody have any ideas/experiences with this problem?

steering reservoir and route it to a catch can (you may have to rig a
temporary extension line to reach). Start the engine, turn the steering
wheel to left lock, to right lock, and turn off the ignition. Do this
quickly because that reservoir will go dry in a few seconds. If possible,
have an assistant operate the steering wheel while you pour in new "blood"
as fast as needed. Reconnect the return line. Top off the reservoir.
Test drive the vehicle.
