unexplained gas milage

i usually get 300-350 miles per tank. I have broken 400 miles per tank for the last 3 or 4 tanks... Any idea as to why this would happen, i dont think i am driving much more conservatively. Its weird, the only thing that has happened is i got a new job that is further away, but its all city driving so i figured that wouldnt do a thing. Not complaining just thought it was weird. Maybe cold weather? Has this happened to anybody else.

Glad I'm not the only one with crappy milage. My '96 GXE (RIP) got good milage, upwards of 450 per tank. My '97 SE gets maybe 350. Both have /had 60k miles on them, and both only have a K&N filter and FSTB as mods. Could the stock tire size differences cause the difference? (all tires at 35 psi). They're both auto's, too. Also, my SE has the spoiler and sunroof w/wind deflector. Could these things add that much aerodynamic resistance?

By some freak of nature I managed 32.5 mpg on a trip I took this past weekend. It was all highway driving, and my usual mpg is around 29. The only difference is I filled up with BP instead of Mobil, although I doubt that would matter.

yea this sucks. A lot of people get much better milage, but many can't get it that high. I drive really smooth and a lot of highway, still get 300 miles at most, sunroof, spoiler and all that stuff can't possibly cause such a bad drop. I am at 61k miles too. I need to change my spark plugs and flush the radiator. I already changed my fuel filter, I did notice a difference of maybe 20 miles more per tank, not much. It's weird, some people get 350 all city, and nearly 500 on highway!!!

Does turning the climate control off in our cars make much difference? I usually get around 280 to a tank...oh well, I guess its better than my 8 mpg firebird.

i've been getting the same "problem"? hehe

recently i've been filling up with 94 octane and i think that's why i've been getting around 280-310 miles per fillup.

Though i'm wondering if it might also be because i just changed all my tires?? and my other ones sucked? It all hapenned around the same time.

Either way, i was alsways used to getting around 200 miles before my tank was about empty. which i'm noticing is pretty sh!tty...

even 300 seems pretty low compared to everyone else.

For those getting bad mileage check you're front O2 sensors. This could be a clue. I've been getting horrible mileage then recently my Engine light came on. Had it checked and it was one of the Front Bank O2 Sensors. I found out that this is a common problem for our cars.

I got a Y, and my mileage went DOWN from 300/fill to 260/fill

I just don't get it.

I do admit, I drive very aggressively, but now that I know some of you are getting 400, there's GOT to be something wrong.

hmm

well, doesn't the y-pipe not require o2 sensors or something? Or pre-cats where the O2 sensors go? (someone correct me please) o2 sensors play a good role in fuel economy, so misfunctioning of one, or lack of one might cause lower gas milage.. though i never heard of people complain of worse gas milage because of y-pipes.. except people cant resist to pushing their cars harder with one

I made an insanely long trip up to Arkansas, one year, from Houston. I got just over 600 miles to a tank. I use Premium; I only had to fill ONCE (going up). Also, if your overdrive is getting a bigger chance to work, I think it would affect your milage.

I love talking about mpgs as you all know, I just got 28 mpg on the way up, and 33.5 on the way back, on a 245 mile trip each way (490 miles). Did not hit any traffic over the GW Bridge which helped.

I simply cannot understand how you know you get 300-350 miles per tank, unless you drive until you run out. Are you eyeballing the needle? You have to fill-up the tank and let the pump tell you how much petrol you have consumed. Even that can vary by up to 0.4 gal depending on if you play the top-off game, which you shouldn't.

This motor, when tuned, should bang-out 27 mpg minimum highway, and I've never gotten less than 19 in stop/go. I have avg'd 17 when I got caught in stop/go traffic, but that's not a fair estimate of mpg. This is with a 5-spd which I believe gets better mileage even though the EPA says nix.

I get about 350-375 per tank completely city on average. What's weird is that every once in a blue moon, I'll have a tank only last like, 280-300, and then the rest will be back up to where they should be. I'm bone stock, and drive like the family man that demographics suggest I might be for owning this car

"All that crap" in the gas in the winter? Same driving or not, it's your car that's giving you worse milage, not the gas. Do some investigating to find out why.

And stop resurrecting crusty threads.

city driving i usually get 320/340 per tank (i drive untill the light comes and stays on) the most i ever got was 440 i think cool weather and all highway miles.

my max however did not come with any optional equipment so maybe it is a little lighter than other maximas.

96 se 5spd (comes with a heavy footed driver and an almost slipping clutch)

It's the gas. There are different formulations for summer/winter. The oxygenates are different and the RVP values are different. Combine that with cold starts, engines that take longer to warm up and accessory use and the same car over the same trip driven the same way will see different mpg values in different seasons.

What's wrong with old threads?

I can time the good/bad (relativly) gas milage to the exact dates we switch to and from 85/15 gas here (Colorado) so I know its the gas, 3 years in a row now
