Hella Air Horns Installation: Use Relay or Not?

I read what seems to be two options on th eMegaMax web site regarding installing Hella air horns for the Maxima. At one point Jeff Ketch points out that there's a short cut where you can forget about the relay and just plug a male connector from the stock horn switching into the compressor, and then ground the compressor. THe detailed instructions, though, show the use of the relay.

I've noticed that otehr users ahve this mod -- how did you guys do it? Is one way preferable to the other?

i have heard so many ppl installing air-horns without using realys...i have them installed but i used relays to install them. I also did an install on my friends civic without any relays splicing straight into stock wires. But that kept blowing fuse, so what we did was put in 15 amp fuse instead of 7.5. And it has been working perfectly since witout blowing any fuses. hope this helped!

YES if you are planing on holding it down for more than 1 second...

I did it both ways. Without relay, you can honk the horn < 1 second. Everything will be fine. If you hold the horn for more than 1 sec, you will blow the fuse.

Use the relay. If it's in the box, it's there for a reason.

And yet, do like Confused says and give someone a nice surprise the next time they have their head inside your engine bay.

NO NO NO NO NO NO

You only have to use the relay if you are keeping your existing horns...if you not, just take the old horns out, put the new ones in, make sure to ground them and happy horning

YOU MUST USE A RELAY!!!
the relay supplies the compressor a full 12volts from the battery direct. Keep in mind a relay is an electronic switch, so when you hit the horn you trigger the relay to open and give the compressor the full 12volts it needs to operate correctly!! There is no way a compressor can operate off just the existing horn wire. Even if it did work they would not be operating to their full potential.

I would reccomend taking out both of the stock horns and replacing them with the new airhorns. Then all you need to do is grab the source wire from one of the horns and run it into the relay along with a power wire from the battery direct(with inline 15amp fuse), then ground the relay and run the output of the relay to the compressor. It should be all layed out for you on the instruction sheet. You will need a few connectors too that fit the relay to make wiring alot easier.

any other questions just ask

Anthony

Push and hold your horn down for 5 seconds. Let us know what happens.

With my relay in, I held it down for 1 minute ... while following some jerk-off who cut me off.

Yes.... bad "road-raged" moderator... BAD!
