Should I step up to the challenge?

One of my friends, who is a fellow car enthusiast, asks me when we are going to drag race. He drives an 98 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro, which is completly stock right now, but he has an exhaust and chip on order. So should I race him before and after his mods, and do I have a chance of winning this.

even if you have an auto you should beat him, not by much when your cars are stock, the 1.8t is not particualry fast stock. But after he mods his car, you will be dusted. If hes doing what i think hes doing, then hes chipping his car to get more psi boost from the turbo. Typically these chips will boost psi to about 14 or 15. This will give him equivalent to or close to the power/weight ratio of an S4. The exhaust will only amplify the distance between you and him. Srry to kill you hopes

you can't come close to an S4 with just a chipped 1.8t. the S4 has a biturbo v6 with 250hp, while the 1.8t is a 4 banger around 150-170hp stock.. Even if he chips it, it won't go too much above 200 hp, and thats only after his turbo spools up.. Basically, you can smoke him when he's stock (I'm assuming you're both stick, or both auto), but after he puts in a chip and exhuast, its gonna be close, but I think you should still win due to a lack of turbo lag on your part.

uh, no. The same 1.8t is used in the audi tt and it pushs out 225hp stock. Also never said you would come close in horsepower ratings. What i said was that you will have near the same power to weight ratio. The S4 is a very heavy car for a car and is not extreamly fast for a car in its catagory. 0-60 5.9(5spd/6.5(auto. As for spooling up, audis turbo spools up very quicky with near max torque at only 1800 rpm and up until about 6k so yes he will be dusted

the 225 hp audi tt uses a larger turbo (K04 i think) and an intercooler, so you'd need to put more than a chip in to get an A4 to the same power output... I agree, the chipped 1.8t's can be very fast, but I doubt he will get "dusted".. It will all depend on driver skill..

Also, you say that the S4 is a very heavy car... Its got the same body as the A4, and uses the same quattro system, so the only difference in weight would come from the engine, so I doubt you could match an S4 with a chipped A4.

If you are both stock autos: You will win.
If you are both stock manuals: You will win.

Don't listen to some of these other people they don't know what they're talking about. The Audi car is slower than the Maxima (both stock) according to CAR & DRIVER.
A4 1.8t Quattro:
0-60MpH: 8.3 sec.
1/4 mile: 16.3 sec.
Maxima:
0-60MpH: 7.6 sec.
1/4 mile: 15.9 sec.

Both of our cars are 5-speed, and he is completly stock. On the other hand my only mod is a $20 cone filter from autozone. My car feels a little sluggish since it is due for the 60k mile service, not to mention my tires might as well be made of plastic. It is worth a try so I will try to get a hold of him soon.
He was telling me that the chip will bump up his boost and give him ~30hp(i think).
I'll let you guys know the results.

1.8T pushes out 225hp in the TT, and pushes out 170hp in the '01 A4. There's a reason the 225hp TT has 2 intercoolers - different turbo.

I mis-typed, and your right. I was trying to say that the 1.8 is capable of delivering more power in a4 form

yeah you can get mad power out of it.. before I got my maxima i wanted to get a 1.8t passat and chip it... the only problem is the long term reliability because you are putting more stress on the engine.. and it kind of voids your warranty

then i got my parents' maxima for free, so i'm happy

Your power-to-weight reference is completely correct...the S4 weighs more than the A4, so if you slap on a KO4 with other mods you'll have nearly the same straightline performance and better handling.

You know what's funny about the Audi TT? It's available with 2 engines, a 1.8 turbo or a 1.8 turbo. The stock one has 180 hp, just like the A4, the 2nd one has 225 hp. The difference being that the 225 unit gets another inter-cooler and probably more boost (the compression ratio is lower in the 225 hp unit)

Not only are the 2 engine blocks the same, but I think the turbos are the same as well.

the 225hp tt uses a larger turbo... might be the K04

and it has two intercoolers, otherwise the engine is the same
