true dual exhaust

I've been interested in designing a true dual exhaust for my max and have searched and saw a few people that wanted to do it, or where going to, but no one really has a completed thread on it. so i was wondering if anyone has actually accomplished a true dual exhaust and how they did it. I've seen a couple of ideas on how to do it on here, but I don't really want to crush the spare tire spot and rather have 2 mufflers then a dual in, dual out muffler. I might be out of luck on this one but just throwing it out there to see what other people have done.

what i drew up was 2 different ways to do it when i was considering it for my max.

removal of y-pipe and do an equal length pipe down to an X pipe where the 2 parking brakes separate and just dump it out the sides with 2 resonators stashed somewhere.

or keep the y-pipe and have a 20+in resonator right after the caddi converter and either run it out the sides again or smash in the spare tire well and run em straight back, but i figured that would be risky with a drop.

are cars ride high but there is not much room without using a hammer to get an exhaust with a real muffler in there, insane resonators was the only way i saw.

i saw a pretty well tuned grand am the other day at school, one of the best modded Pontiacs ive seen that ran true duels down to the tailend where it had a duel in/out muffler and the pipes came out of the reverse light spots. very sporty.

waiting for mofp to get in here, he had some good ideas.

True trio > true dual
There is a lot of fab work involved. It's really not worth the time, effort, and money to do it. If you really want custom exhaust work, try doing a 3" instead.

Get a decent single exhaust... then buy a second tip. Just slice a semi-circle out of the left side of the bumper, and then mount the other tip there so it looks like dual exhaust.

Did you ever get this done?

It is true that doing a true dual exhaust on Maxima does entail lots of fabbing. I was very pleased with the end results. Lots of free flow, and a VQ35 sound like no other

I used to have some pics posted here, but for some reason imageshack gave me the finger. Anyway, I have uploaded a few old pictures.

The setup consists of modified headers, 3" collectors, 2.5" TRUE dual, with a x-pipe, and magnaflow resonators. I did modify the evap system brackets and moved everything closer towards the sheet metal. Additionally, I did bang a bit of the spare tire to make room for the resonators. Lastly, I added to heating barrier to couple of areas (around evap, fuel lines, fuel tank, etc.)

Here are the images, and sorry about my $hitty photoshop skills on that last pix

what exactly is the purpose of the X/H pipe anyways? emissions such as the 02 sensor or cat?

it's for performance.

IIRC, the X-pipe does something where the exhaust flow from the cylinders whose exhaust valves just opened help 'suck' the exhaust out of the cylinders whose exhaust valves are about to open by creating a vacuum in the opposite header as they go through the x-pipe.

The H-pipe, i'm not really sure about. I think an x-pipe would do a better job scavenging exhaust than a H-pipe.

Hmmm, this thread has got me thinking. Here's a question: With a dual exhaust with x pipe, what gains and disadvantages (if any) are we looking at??

I did read that its for performance, will the car accelerate better and will it affect fuel economy?

I'll be running a 3 inch for my max this year. I'm sure the long tube headers with a true dual exhaust would sound pretty good.

I does drone a bit, but it iss easily tolerable. It WAY louder outside the vehicle than it is inside.

I have this 3 year old blurry picture on hand....lol.

You can get another glimpse of what it sounds/looks from a couple of videos that I have from dyno runs and such. If you want and inside/outside video/audio, go to streetfire and search for "meximax". There is video there, but dont' wanna post a link, I don't want to get banned

Dyno vids for additional sound:

Another video of a hwy run, but recorded with a digital camera (which means $hitty audio).

Enjoy.

probably the easiest way is to run them out near the front rather than the entire length of the car?

Yeah, but meximax got the dual exhaust in the rear. THat proves it can be done.
