help??!! - Transmission/Clutch Problems

ok just recently got a 96 GLE with 170,000 on it...it still has factory clutch and tranny according to previous owner...got the car out the shop for work needed to be done to brakes and drove car 2 days and noticed a burning smell...went out to drive car today and i get down the road and car doesnt go into 1st or 2nd gear at all but goes into all others without fail...any ideas if thats the clutch or tranny itself? 170,000 on both clutch and tranny.

I thought the GLE was automatic only.

yeah, i must have glanced over that. if it's a GLE as you stated it does not have a manual tranny unless it was swapped..

which brings into question the whole 170k original trans and clutch question.

well a GLE is what the previous owner told me but im pretty sure its a GXE with moonroof options and manual tranny but yeah he also said factory clutch still...i will get up with him later today to verify more info on the car cuz 170k on factory clutch seemed outrageous to me also...maybe hes not original owner and they had the clutch replaced before he bought it...but im hoping its not a tranny rebuild already cuz my 89 SE's tranny lasted until 217k.

If it doesn't go into 1st or 2nd it is likely the tranny. It is BETTER to get your tranny rebuilt than putting another used one in there

Next time make a better thread title

you did drive it prior to purchasing it correct? did it whine? hard to shift? also did you check to see how the tranny oil looks?

Hey, thats part of buying a used car and not asking proper questions. Plus, if you had done any looking in the 4th gen section anyway you would see that these trannies get tired very early in life. And you should have checked all things possible anyway. Get under it to verify that the linkage is clear of obstruction, although after working on mine i don't imagine anything is up there. As eFLO stated, did you check the fluid at all?

In my opininon, yes. it sounds like a rebuild is in order, and I agree with Kevlo911, rebuild yours and avoid a used one. Goes along the same lines as the car. If you get the used tranny, you have no idea how long IT will last.

Original clutch on my 95 SE went to 192K miles. There was still some clutch material left when the center section broke free due to metal fatigue.

And original MT is still going strong (knock on wood, of course) at 209K.

I have seen bad slave cylinders and master cylinders cause enough drag to keep a trans from going into gear.

does it go in to 1st or 2nd when the car is turned off? if so, it's likely an extremely worn clutch. I've dealt with this before. adjusting the clutch engagement might help for a short time, but clutch replacement is the only real long term solution.

if it doesn't go in to 1st or 2nd when the car is turned off, what does it do? does the shifter go over to the left towards 1st and 2nd but you just can't push it up into 1st or down into 2nd, or does it not even pull over towards 1st and 2nd? if it doesn't go in to 1st or 2nd with the car off, you've got a problem inside the transmission.

At 170k, and with those symptoms, you should have the clutch replaced and have the transmission checked out while it's down.

With a new clutch and verification your transmission internals look good, it will be primed for another 170k.

Yes, because in a few more days it may be coming back out again.

For $200, if you can find a 5 speed that cheap, I would not expect good things. Too many bad used 5 speeds out there.

i havent tried it yet while the car is turned off cuz it pissed me off that day and havent messed with it since lol...but ill try today and see but i mean it goes all the way to the left but goes into 3rd gear instead and for 2nd it just feels like somethings blocking it from going down further to get in gear...its just that how it feels to me...ive never had a clutch go out or tranny cuz i usually change mine before they end up giving out but seein as im strapped for cash now cuz of the holidays...rebuilding this tranny is out the question...lol right now that is...

so with the car off the shifter moves all the way left and right like normal but still only engages 3rd-5th gear...no 1st no 2nd....sorry it took me so long to get back...been mad busy with work.
