just replaced outer cv dust boot

When I knocked the outer axle back onto the main drive shaft, it looks like it only engages about 1cm before the lock ring goes into position...is this right?

Yup, Ain't much room in there. Make sure it's locked in place and you should be fine.

Ok...so I just took her out for a test drive...and the axle separated on me at the outer joint!!!
Got her back home(had my dad push her with his truck and managed to break a tailight.
I got the axle apart again, and this time I whacked it with a brass mallot until it locked...I then tugged on it to check its lock-strength, and it came looses again by sheer hand power!!
I also noticed that the small lock ring broke into three pieces...could that ring have caused all the trouble? Can I order a new one you think?
