There is a specification for the camshaft sprockets - the runout has to be less than 0.15mm. If it's above that they need to be replaced.

I've got no idea how common it is to replace them, but there is a runout spec.

The main chain rides on 3 different timing gears, not two (both intake cams and the crank). Personally, I've never seen the need to replace them (nor the chain itself, but you seem to already be set on that).

Any reason you're replacing the chain?

well, its been rattling at start up for several minutes, it does get quiet eventually. and i was told that since i am doing the water pump soon that it has to be removed anyway. some op say just do tensioners and maybe guides but its at 200,000 miles and i want to keep it for another year or 2.

Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've read the chain shouldn't have to be replaced only the tensioner and the guide need to be replaced to stop the rattling. I haven't done this my self (I plan on it soon because I have the rattling also) but from what I've read that's what my plan of attack is going to be when I do the job.

You really only need to replace the tensioner, shouldn't be that hard to do along with the water pump. They have an updated tensioner for your 95. The rattle will be gone.

Hey got a quick question for ya guys while this topic is up; when you replace your tensioner does it free up a significant enough amount of length to say swap cams?

In order to remove the cams you would need to remove not only the main chain, but also both secondary chains, as well as the timing covers and/or the cam gears.

The main tensioner had an updated model. The main guide should also be replaced with the new revidion.

There are no cam seals.
