Engine cuts at 2,000 revs
My 1998 SE manual tranny experienced many ghastly pre-death rattles today.
The engine runs fine until it hits 2,000 revs, at which time it cuts out, with no trouble lights coming on. Makes no difference what gear I'm in; if I push any gear to 2,000 revs, bang. The engine will turn on and off, in lurching spurts, dying at 2,000 and surging at anything below that (if I let it surge, rather than accepting life as it is, backing off the gas, and driving slowly).
Below 2000, the engine still sounds great.
Checked the oil. No temperature problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

When I got some time I ran a check using an OBD II system I bought recently. It showed only one trouble code: PO 3 25, relating to a knock sensor.
I'll do some research on the MAF, but wonder why that would not show up if the MAF was at fault. Maybe it needs to have more time in trouble?

yes maf related issue...but i had the same problem with my 99 a year ago and it actually came out to be a egr problem..randomly cuts off at 2000 rpm..turn the car off and start it up..it was fine....no egr with the 3.5 swap at the time..put the egr in and now im still codeless
