Engine tune-up suggestions

Hello fellow orgers.....I been having a little leak here and there, the valve cover gaskets and a rear main seal(said my mechanic) which will require the lowering of the transmission. My question is, apart from these what else should i consider being that im gonna be in the transmission area (possibly a clutch kit)? Also, a friend of mine said i should consider some engine seals so that everything on it will be good again for a good while with absolutley no leaks.Any idea where i can locate these seals? What else do you guys think should be done in terms of replacing. Let me know what you think.Thanx!

Replace as much as you can afford. Now is a good time to install intake manifold spacers and a variable intake manifold.

I had some response to replace the timing chain guide and tensioner, as well as two o-rings in that area (if your are in the water pump area).

i'm not trying to be a smart ***. but you did ask

so here goes...

besides of all that, this is what i think my Tune Up would consist of including the parts you have listed, i will add this... replace the PCV or PVC (whatever it is) hose.. hmm.... get injectors cleaned, clean out your UIM, TB, clean the EGR tube, i bet it's clogged, clean your Cam and Crank shaft position sensors and make sure they fall between the resistance that the haynes manual says, umm, clean your coil packs if they need to be cleaned. make sure all your connectors are not corroded or have frayed wires, change your thermostat if it needs one, flush the radiator, change the radiator hoses, change engine oil and tranny oil as well, change air filter, change o2 sensors, be sure the battery cables are tight and free of corrosion, check brake fluid and power steering fluid, check all your vacuum hoses to be sure none are wore out or damaged, change fuel filter, and fuel pump ( IF NEEDED ). and that would be it for me..

and for added "G" points, try these as well (if applicable to your current state and plans. Varies from state to state, and individual results may vary)

do a compression check on ALL 6 cylinders, check fuel pressure with key on engine off (KOEO) and key on engine running (KOER), do an "injector balance" test, do a "power balance" test (they are 2 different things), if you have a scan tool check your LT fuel trim and ST fuel trim - make sure your o2 sensors are working correctly, do a coolant temperature check, and check the rear bank converter on your car to be sure it is working properly (if you have yours) while using a pyrometer - (a pyrometor is a digital thermometor with a laser on it. it allows you to check the temperature of anything you put that laser on, the maximum temperature range on some of those is usually 998 degrees F, but sometimes in that case if it is too high, it will just read Hi) make sure you use it by aiming before the convertor and after the converter (give us your readings if you have done it, check all your hoses and pans and gasket seals to be sure none of them are leaking. Anyways, that is just me if i was to do a tune up... i would check everything.. but these were just tips.. Enjoy

Ok, rear main seal is a must. cause its the reason im doing any of this. But what/where is this front seal.?

Also what is a water pump valve gasket?

Oil filter seal? I don't remember seeing that changing oil last time. I thought there was a rubber seal on the filter itself.

Hmm, ok. Is this on the outside of the engine....in other words, can this be changed without taking apart the engine or droping it.?

i think you have to take the timing chain and all off all thats involved with that do u do your own work ? u dont have to take the engine out but ur deff going to have to take alot of stuff off an the rear u will have to take the transmissiom off and fly wheel all that jazz

My brothers and i were going to be doing it. But i dont think we were going to do anything around the timing chain area. I heard that area can be quite tricky.

yeah it can be a pain and u dont want to move anything if that chain if off the rear seal is easy enough if u have a 5 speed go ahead and do ur clutch while ur changin the rear seal

Thanx for all the input guys. Last but not least, what parts would you guys NOT buy from advance auto parts. Im trying to cut down the costs a little and wanted to know what to get from dealer and what i can get from advance instead.

I have a similar question... I'm about to replace my Valve cover gaskets and I figured since I'm gonna be digging through the engine, I wanted to know what things should I replace and especially clean out... I wanna buy everything in advance for the prep work and such
