overdrive on/off

The End.

Oh wait, no it isn't. It disengages the final drive. It turns your 4-speed into a three-speed.

When you drive the car with the O/D off then your car will shift 1,2,3. If you have O/D on the it will shift 1,2,3,4. It will not increase power. Now click on that link I showed you. You can check youtube for videos of it in action. Also you can search on here for it and read about it. It will cost you about $5 to do if you do it correctly. That will make your car faster. I don't know if I should have told you all that though. Good luck.

The automatic tranny on the maxima is a 4 gear transmission. Like many other cars back in that time. Your car goes through gears starting from 1st to 4th, each gear going sequentially in acceleration.
Now overdrive is 4th gear. When you click O/D off what you are doing is telling your car DO NOT USE 4th gear. Why? Because this is mainly a gear used to cruise on the highway.
Times you may want to click O/D off...
1. You are doing mostly local driving under 50-55 mph. You can save tranny some wear and tear because it wont be constantly changing gears. This will most likely slightly decrease your gas mileage.
2. On highway you cruise but want to pass someone. Easiest way is to downshift to 3rd gear and get the car in a better power range. If you step on the gas you feel a bit of lag then the rush of power after RPM spikes. This is your car automatically going to 3rd gear.

will someone just hand out fsm's to all the noobs please?!!!! friggin christ!!!!
Overdrive is just a fancy name for top gear. Turning overdrive off keeps the transmission from shifting up past 3rd gear. Turning it on lets it go all the way to 4th.
So yeah, it affects top speed. It's often useful to turn OD off if you anticipate having to pass on the freeway (because as noted, it improves acceleration).
I also like to turn off overdrive when cruising at below 45 in town because it means the car isn't going back and forth between 4th gear (efficient) and 3rd gear (power) so it's more responsive.
Technically, OD is just any gear where the output shaft on the transmission is turning faster than the input shaft (or the engine itself) which is bad for power but great for efficiency while cruising. to be honest, i almost never turn o/d off, it feels like im gonna speed up and crash into someone real quick. thats why i just leave it on, i'll use it to brake the engine if im going down a hill a little too quickly, but thats about it.
