My WS ypipe install

As most everyone knows here the ypipe is one of the biggest power
robbing pieces of crap on the Maxima's. Some people say its easy to install
but if your like me and have a older maxima with more miles and rust, its not so easy. Most of the bolts came off with some flexing and air tools but of course to 2 bolts that connect the y to the cat are a royal pain in the &^% !

On my car they were rusted thru and had to be cut off
also one of the biggest reasons I bought the ypipe was
because my stock flex section was rusted to hell and made my car sound like an old chevy truck !

Take alook at these pics from my old cellphone

This is my first real mod as the rest of the car is completely stock and hasn't been modified.

Next up will be the rest of the exhaust ! I need a bpipe and a muffler...

Looks good man. Do the exhaust now and you are set. Feel the gains from the ypipe?

Yeah as soon as I reset the ecu (unplug the battery) I noticed it spooled up faster then before and really loved to rev !

The car is def easier to move now and if I can mange to keep my foot under control (wont happen)
I can gain some additional MPG

Even with a bad weld on the muffler (where the B pipe meets the muffler)it still halls and the ypipe just helps it along.

i just got my y pipe installed, aside from hearing it you can definitely feel it also! i was a little upset that it got so loud. i have a megan muffler so i guess that attributes to it, real silent at idle though.

Did your Y-pipe cause the rest of your exhaust to shift to one side or the other? I did this same mod a little while ago and now my exhaust sometimes rattles against my heat shielding but most of the time its fine.

Yes it does, you have to put it on a lift, and adjust the flex section and loosen/tighten bolts to make it work right, mine was that way until I got the whole thing welded, no more sounds....

So you didn't have to mod your o2 sensors in anyway?

Cutting of the rusted Cat studs did you have to replace the cat or did you weld it to the y-pipe?

I'm planning on replacing my y-pipe but with over 140,000 miles here in New England it's not coming off easy. It's rusted red and the cat studs look melted to the y-pipe.

Warspeed sells the y-pipe with a cat for $285 so to play it safe I might also replace that old cat.

My flex pipe recently broke off from the rear exhasut also. My pal welded it back on at his autobody shop but I might as well replace that.

Tell me were you purchased that tiny flex pipe?

If you replacefd that flex pipe tell me were you purchased it.

Right after lowering my car with new struts and springs my flex pipe broke off. My pay welded back on at his autobody shop.

I had my catback replaced 21,000 miles ago but everyhting else is OEM with over 140,000 miles here in New Englad. I'm positive my cat studs will have to be cut so I'm going to order the warpseed cat with the y-pipe for $285.

Thanks,

John

Hmm weird your exaust system is different then mine. I have a 96 and am missing that small pipe with the o2 sensor in it.I think the 95 and 96 maxima's are different from your 98 because our 3rd o2 sensor actually mounts in the back of the cat converter.

Yeah that deal sounds good but make sure you hang on to the old one just in case you dont pass emissions in your state.

If I order the Cat and Y-pipe warpspeed will send me that small extension pipe where the rear O2 sensor mounts for free.
They also reminded me of how strict the emissions test are in MA. CA is the only state that has a stricter test.
I'll talk to some local inspection shops about some of the details of the emission test and if a y-pipe without pre-cats will likely pass or not.

Yeah man ask around before you make the decision cuz its a big one.
I would stick with the stock cat though if I were you. That way you have
a good chance of passing.

Those cat bolts are most likely welded/rusted on and only heat can break them. You can try cutting but then you would have to weld the ypipe to the cat.

I think I can tell the location just from those pics. Maxprivate took me to that shop to show me his car when it was being worked on. I felt so bad for the mexican guy working on the car because he had no idea what a vq35 swap was and tried telling the owner his engine was all screwed up. Imagine being a mechainc and wondering why the timming area is all different. What a throwback thread...
