Dealership = Stealership? Think again !

so my recent problem was horrible MPG averaging about 10mpg with highway driving too..
so i take my car to my very close mechanic and like everyone he's trying to make money so he pulls my codes and finds out i have a bad o2 sensor in bank#2... this is the one connected to the cat right?
and the other code is an egr code...
so anyways after making me wait 2 hours he calls the owner which knows me pretty well due to family business and then he comes up with a price of $550 for changing both items -.-

I believe i can get an o2 sensor for about 20 bucks...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-B...item5ad2911e15

or

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OXYGE...item51911ec55a

or

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OXYGE...item35a7b774a0

which one of the 3 would be best? as all of them have different amount of wires =/ and yea the egr... should i buy one from a junkyard or what would be my best bet...

please help i really dont feel like paying $20 gas every 2-3 days.

oh and would just using the how-to to clean the egr work or should i just buy a better one ?

I recently replaced two of my three 02 sensors(the firewall side one wouldn't come out). I paid around $200 for all three sensors NGK brand. I paid my brother who is a mechanic $50 to clean out the EGR tube. Sadly though, I still get the EGR flow trouble code. Anyway, I would think that you could do the sensor yourself at least. I find that one near the cat the easiest to get to.

Yeah try cleaning the EGR guide tube. There is a nice thread around somewhere. Do a search.

As for the O2 sensor, bank two is upstream, even numbered pistons I think. The one behind the cat is the downstream sensor. If the down stream sensor is bad, it will not affect gas mileage. All the upstream sensors are three wire, so go with the three wire O2 sensor.

I'm pretty sure if you are standing on the passenger's side facing the front of the engine, bank two is on your right. It would also be called the front bank. It has the even numbered cylinders.

Please, correct me if I am wrong.

Yeah don't see how it happened lol. Anyway I got the egr code years ago tried just cleaning it and the code came back so then I just replaced it and still get the code everynow and then. Can't get rid of it so have to keep cleaning it and it will go away for a few months. When my o2 sensors went bad it was causing me to stall but don't think it affected my mpgs although i'm not 100% sure since was so long ago. And yes that price seems pretty high to me.

+1.

Get an OE Bosch sensor. Do yourself a favor. Get the plug'n'play ones. They are like $92.

Well, when you buy my 00VI you'll have an excuse to install a clean EGR and that should help your MPG.....
