fm didn't really suffer too much. Am went from bad to terrible.
really depends on what you wanna do. I replaced my deck and listen to sirius/xm almost all the time. I didn't bother with replacing the antenna.
on second thought, this might be specific to your area and the strength of the signals. you might want to test it out by disconnecting the radio and see if you can live with the signal strength.

Like JSMax said, pull the cable and see if you need it. I would guess that an ant in the trunk would be pretty well blocked from receiving well, anyway. If you 'need' AM, you'll have to come up with something, but local FM doesn't need the ant.
When I was doing a boat stereo install, I heard from a salesman at West Marine to mount the cable antennae to two surfaces with it bent halfway in the middle at a 90degree angle. That way whenever you turn, the antennae always has a side facing the signal(ie it's never straight on to the signal). Hope this helps.
If I were to remove the telescoping one, I would put the new cable antannae up the door pillar by the windshield and bend it around to the headliner.

if you have bose it doesn't matter. bose will use the printed antenna on the rear windshield (di-polar, uses whichever has the best signal) or, if you have an aftermarket hu, swap the antenna adapter around to use the printed antenna.
if you have a non-bose radio, you could look into an amplified antenna. mount it pretty much wherever you want inside the vehicle.

Not too many people realize that the Bose system incorporated an antenna in the rear window.
There is a 'sharkfin' antenna on Ebay at the moment for ~15$http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...=STRK:MEWAX:IT
I'm planning on shaving my semi-working antenna for a functional roof fin as well!
