Help Identifying these exhaust parts..

Hi

Recently I had a little tear in the #1 area of the pic below. The bracket holding that up also badly rusted and fell off the car. The catalytic converter is also well rusted. I live in the north where salt is on the roads for a good 4 months straight..the car is almost 14 years old and I still have the original exhaust...but I think I may need to make some changes.

I'm trying to understand the names of the pieces I need. I definately need to replace Parts 1 and 2 in the pic below and also the catalytic converter.

Here's my questions

1) Can part #1 and #2 be bought separately (from one source of course), or do I need to buy the whole thing starting at #3. (meaning if I buy part #1 and #2 does it attached to part #3..or is part #3, #1 all one piece?)

2) What is #1 and #2 called? (Front exhaust tube assembly?...can't seem to find parts by that name)

3) Is #3 what you call the y-pipe?

My local shop is charging me $1,500 with a new cat...and I know I can get it cheaper with better quality parts.

Thanks for your help!

That's called the Y-pipe. It's all 1 peice and cannot be purchased seperately. Do a search for 'y-pipe' in these forums and you'll get a good amount of info and internet sites to buy it at.

I purchased one yesterday from this website for $200:

1+2+3=y-pipe

The 3 sections you have numbered are all actually the y-pipe. I'd suggest you purchase an aftermarket piece rather than an OEM replacement.Of note-it will eliminate the 2 pre-cats which are used during warmup, which I feel is a non-issue. I have a Budget stainless steel y pipe(as many on the board do) which provides the added advantage of increased power over the stock design (as do most y-pipes,typically 10-15hp). Other companies produce good y-pipes, but I mentioned Budget since they are made in Canada by an operation called Lyell's Stainless Steel exhaust, now based in Burlington, and might be your fastest/most cost-effective replacement solution. I purchased it for $250 Cdn a few years ago. Last number I had for them is 905-681-4579.
You might also find one in the classifieds on the site. You would likely find it very useful to search for "y-pipe" on the forum. Lots of comments-it's the first basic mod most people do on a Maxima. Good luck!
P.S.-check your PMs

Do some reading about y-pipes. I would go with a aftermarket Stainless. Keep the rusted cat if it works there is no point in replacing it, they can take a lot more rust then the rest of the exhaust before they are no good and they are expensive.

Okay, just gone thru reading 10 pages on y-pipe...it seems cattman is the way to go. Budget doesn't seem to ship anymore, but I'll try calling them on Monday.

If I do go with the y-pipe catman (stainless) and still leave the rest in (original stock), will it make more noise?

Thanks

a bit deeper when you get on it, but with the rest of the system stock. you wont notice it much. when i did mine i removed my y-pipe cat and did a full 2.5 pipe to my stock muffler, it just changed the tone and made it a titch louder.
but youll gain 7-22hp, depends who you talk to. all y-pipes are about the same gain, cattman being the most of course. its mostly about sound. budget doesnt ship but there are alot in the classifieds, its where i got mine from.
if you wait a month i guarantee there will be a couple pop up.

If you want a 2.5" Y pipe, don't get the generic ones. My XS Power is 2.25".

Hey,

if you want parts like y-pipe, cat and b-pipe, call budget exhaust

Budget Exhaust & Automotive
www.budgetexhaust.ca
4179 Harvester Road
Burlington, ON L7L 5M4
(905) 681-4579

It took 2-3 days to get my y-pipe shipped at home in mtl. Low shipping cost, its in ontario.

They have 2 steel type, stainless one (around 200$ cad, one tax) and aluminized one(cheaper).

If you need any help on parts and install, go to Federal Muffler at lachine, they do a great job for a cheap price. The owner is very professional http://www.federalmufflers.ca/

I took my cat on ebay, it cost me around 60$.

I just called Budget and they don't ship anymore

It's only for a local pick-up...cost is $250 + $40 for an install.

Yes I heard of Federal Mufflers and I did call them...once I get my part I am going there for sure!

Thanks

Conclusion...

So, I went over to Federal Mufflers...looked at my little tear...welded it up, then put on the missing bracket that fell off...installed my oxygen sensor (because I couldn't undo the dam rusted bolt)...then I picked up a can of Salt remover...total charge including tax: $60.00

Car runs fine and no need to install the y-pipe as the other rip off place wanted me to do and charge me $1,500 for it. FM says that the pieces are still good and there is no need to replace them just yet.

Thanks guys for the great referral!

If you do decide to get an aftermarket ypipe, dont forget to consider Warpspeed, they have one in aluminized steel on ebay all the time, and a few packages that come with a high flow cat, legal in all states but CA, just to let youall know.
