"New" Cattman 4th gen Maxima Y-pipes
Just wanted to mention that we're re-introducing two Cattman y-pipes that we haven't made for a few years. Between the two, they cover all 1995-2001 Maximas.
1. Cattman YG4 y-pipes fit all 95-98 Maximas/I30s and 99/00 Maximas/I30s with Federal-type emissions (bottom y-pipe in the picture below).
2. Cattman YG5CA y-pipes are for 99/00 Maximas/I30s with CA/NLEV ("Cali") type emissions and all 2001 Maximas/I30s (top y-pipe in the picture below, production y-pipes will not be labelled )
This isn't the forum for selling, so if you're interested in picking one up, please check out our sale ad on the vendor subforum HERE. I'll be glad to answer any questions here or in the other thread.

3" would be wrong, even if a 3" catback was installed - need to keep the exhaust velocity up going into the cat. 2.5" sounds like it would be about right, but... we tested the heck out these designs about 9 years ago on the 2000 Maxima, and got the best results with a 2.25" rear section (between the flex and the rear flange). That's too small for the catback, and I'd want to go to a 2.5" y-pipe if there was NOS or a major engine build, but its a good match for the VQ30DE with typical bolt-ons.

We've tested an equal length design, and there's no performance advantage compared with assymetric-length downpipes. Not true with headers, but true with y-pipes that are attached to assymetric-length stock manifolds.

FWIW, I have made them both ways, and my observation is that an equal-length y-pipe design makes a huge (positive) sound difference with equal length headers. One of the worst sounds a car can make is a Maxima with an assymetric-length y-pipe and equal-length headers, we discovered this during header development.
But its different when equal- vs assymetric-length y-pipes are used with stock (short and assymetric) manifolds. The pulses coming out of the manifolds are scrambled already, and the design of the y-pipe has much less influence on the sound. It was over 10 years ago when we did this testing, but I can recall that there didn't seem to be enough difference (in sound) to justify the significantly higher cost of producing a y-pipe with equal-length downpipes.
This may be reinforced by the fact that in the late '90s Stillen's early y-pipe was made equal length to compete with ours (we were first, and they were pi~~ed) but I don't recall any discussion on the list-serves about sound differences. After a year or two, they quietly dropped that design feature and went to an assymetric-length y-pipe.

Th car I bought came with a ypipe but I have no clue of manufacturer. Hi flow cat after that with a very well done exhaust with stock (looking) muffler w/nice tip. The entire set up was done at one time & has approximately 15,000 miles on it. My guess is that the ypipe is stainless, & looks fine with no leak anywhere in the system.

3" exhaust for 4th gen
I spoke to Brian earlier and he does not make a 3" exhaust for the 4th gen. However if we can get at least 10 people who are interested in one, Brian would be more than happy to make the exhaust for us. I started a thread in the 4th gen section about this. http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....ferrerid=53115
